Ranked fifth in Class 3A by the Associated Press, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (15-1, 7-0 NEIC) continues to fuel the fire with back-to-back wins over New Hampton and Beckman Catholic over the weekend.
Big win
First on tap for the weekend was a date with the Chickasaws. The Vikings visited New Hampton (8-9, 4-5 NEIC) Friday night and came away with a 67-31 victory.
Decorah built a 12-4 lead in the first period and extended its advantage to 25-15 at halftime. As the second half got under way, the Chickasaws pulled to within six before the Vikes rallied with an 11-4 run to finish out the third period with a 44-25 lead. The Decorah defense stood tall in the final quarter with the Vikings outscoring the home team 23-6.
Trey McCain had the hot hand of the night, leading all scorers with 21 points along with five steals and four rebounds. Ben Bockman was also in double figures with 11 to go with eight boards, while Jacob Pipho and Noah Storts provided eight points apiece. Joe Hjelle led all rebounders with nine.

Blazers chilled
Packing their bags for a second time in 24 hours, the Vikings traveled to Beckman Catholic (6-7) for a non-conference game Saturday afternoon. Despite a halftime deficit, Decorah rally to win 67-51.
Beckman led for the entirety of the first half and went to the locker room with a 26-24 advantage over the visiting Vikings. Decorah kicked off the second half on an 8-0 run, keeping the Blazers off the board until the 4:00 mark and only gave up four points in the third period to lead 42-30 with eight minute to play.
Ben Bockman led the scoring chart for Decorah with 17 points with four rebounds, with Pipho on his heels with 16 and six boards. Three other Vikes hit double figures including a 12-point game for McCain to go with six assists. Putting down 10 points each were Carson Wemark and Joe Bockman.

The Vikings are off until later this week when they host Waukon on Friday, Feb. 4, then travel to Charles City Saturday, Feb. 5, for a 2:30 p.m. tip-off.
