No. 6 Decorah come out on top of No. 11 W-SR

By Becky Walz,

It was a tough test Friday night on the road as the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team (10-2, 5-0 NEIC) defeated No. 11 Waverly-Shell Rock (6-3, 3-1 NEIC) in Waverly, 60-48.
It’s just the second time since January 2010 that Decorah has gotten the best of the Go-Hawks.
The Vikes were in a tussle from the beginning, going up 18-13 at the end of the first quarter. The game was still too close for comfort at halftime with Decorah holding on to a 33-27 lead. In the third, the Vikes opened the gap a little more and led 47-39 with eight minutes left to play. The Red and Blue maintained and extended its lead in the fourth to take home the win.

“This was a good win for us and our program. Waverly is a difficult gym to play in, but our girls maintained discipline and executed the game plan,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl.
Aside from big points from Yazmeen Whitsitt and Bryar Duwe, the difference maker according to Coach Quandahl was Kylie O’Hara’s rebounding. O’Hara pulled down a team-high 13 boards to go with her four points, while Whitsitt put up 23 points. Duwe was on her heels with 22 points with five steals and four assists.
Monday, Jan. 9, the Vikings were at MFL MarMac for a non-conference contest. Decorah will host Charles City Friday, Jan. 13, at 6:45 p.m., then travel to Manchester to face West Delaware Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
