The South Winn Warriors improved to 9-1 on the season and 7-0 in conference play with dominating victories over Postville Monday before suffering their first loss of the season to Newman Catholic Tuesday.
Moved to Calmar
It was an easy sweep over Postville (0-8, 0-8 UIC) on Monday evening as the Warriors blanked the Pirates, 14-0 and 17-0, at home. Due to wet field conditions in Postville, the game was moved to Calmar.
Starting pitching by seniors Lane Quandahl and Tony Greve came up with two shutouts. The Warriors offense put up several big innings, putting pressure on the Postville defense and capitalizing with some big hits and taking advantage of some Pirate miscues.
“I was pleased with how our pitchers attacked the strike zone, and overall, we made the routine plays over the course of the two games defensively. Offensively we eliminated swing and misses and put the ball in play consistently over the course of the doubleheader,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Rain delay
In a battle of the No. 8 Warriors versus No. 2 Newman (13-3) in Class 1A, with the Newman Knights came out on top, 3-0, Tuesday night in Mason City.
After a nearly two-hour rain delay, play resumed in the second inning at 9:45 p.m. with the score 0-0. The Warriors had runners in scoring position off the delay but failed to capitalize and Newman took advantage of a Warrior miscue to score two runs in the second and one in third inning and that was all they needed.
The Warrior trio of pitchers kept them in the game, but offensively a single by Dayten Ondrashek was the only hit of the game.
“Newman always has great depth on the mound, and their pitcher did a nice job against us changing speeds and locating his fastball. We’ve got to continue to progress offensively, and I’m confident our pitching and defense will keep us in ball games consistently. Our guys look forward to their next opportunity,” said Coach Smith.
