No. 9 Vikes fight off Wahlert for win

By Becky Walz,

Fans of high school soccer knew Monday’s Class 2A playoff game between ninth-ranked Decorah and Dubuque Wahlert would be an all-out battle. In a physical game with both teams hungry for the win, the rivals went back and forth on the Decorah field for the full 80 minutes, with the Vikings coming out on top 3-1.
Wahlert managed to put the ball in the net first near the midpoint of the first half. Noah Milburn and Erik Hjelle lead the backline and shut down Wahlert after conceding the first goal. Brady Benzing provided a standout performance in the midfield shutting down most of Wahlert’s attacks before they could get momentum. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Jake Magner scoring the tying goal. At halftime, the score remained tied.
Decorah’s Ian Giddings and Jeramiah Rediske scored two goals in the last seven minutes of the game to win. Assisting on the goals were Noah Milburn and Magner.
“The boys showed a lot of resiliency after going down 1-0 to fight back and win the game. I am really proud of what the boys accomplished. They showed a lot of heart and courage to bounce back in a difficult game to come back and win. We are grateful for the wonderful support from our fans and the turnout was fantastic,” said Coach Zachary Shearer.
Decorah hosted No. 11 Center Point-Urbana (11-3) in the substate final Wednesday, May 24. Check online and in the May 30 Driftless Journal for how the Vikings did. A win would put Decorah in the Class 2A state quarterfinals Tuesday, May 30, at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.
