The Decorah football team was hoping for another stunner with North Scott Friday night, but couldn’t find the answer needed to score, falling in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, 35-7.
“North Scott is an excellent team. They came out right away and scored and we could not answer back. We could not establish anything to be able to move the ball with consistency. You have to tip your cap to them and their efforts,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “We are very proud of what we accomplished this year. Our team set some high goals and we accomplished them. We all wanted a little more, but it was not to be.”
The Vikes finish the season 6-4 overall, while North Scott (8-2) advance to round two at top-ranked Western Dubuque (9-1).

Just too much
North Scott took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, with Kyler Gerardy scampering 59 yards, then 46 yards to the end zone. The Lancers added another score in the second period on a 11-yard pass to carry a 21-0 advantage into halftime. After the break, North Scott added two more scores.
Decorah final broke through in the fourth quarter, scoring when Garrett Waskow broke the plane of the goal line from 10 yards out.

Final look
Decorah passed for 116 yards and rushed for another 95 for 211 total. North Scott collected 336 total yards.
Dakota Johnson led the ground game with 79 yards on 23 carries, with Gavin Groux contributed two carries for 24 yards. Louis Bucksa passed 11-for-25. Noah Milburn was the leading receiver with three catches for 32 passes. Brady Benzing hauled in three passes as well for 30 yards.
On defense, Jeron Feuerhelm made five solo tackles and had one assisted stop. Andrew Rhodes was there for four solo tackles and one assisted stop. Benzing provided three solo and two assisted stops.

Last thoughts
“We thank our seniors most who worked very hard and stuck together even when games got tough. We also had a great support system with managers, parents, school faculty and staff, and community businesses and members giving support to us. We could not have had the season we did without their contributions. Finally, I also especially want to thank the coaches and their families – from youth and flag football up through the varsity – for their time, effort and expertise in helping these young people grow. We have a program of people that really care about the growth and development of young people,” Coach Trewin.
