The bats exploded for runs as the Turkey Valley baseball team (3-7, 3-4 UIC) rapped up 12 hits in its four-inning 17-2 win over Postville (0-7, 0-5 UIC) Tuesday night in Jackson Junction.
“It was good to bounce back after last night and the boys did a great job of putting the ball in play,” said Coach Dan Stepan.
The Trojans gave up their only runs of the game in the top of the first before going to work at the plate with two of their own. TV pushed four more across home in the second which was highlighted by a two-out triple by Oliver Schmitt who drove in two. The bulk of the damage was done in the third as the Trojans sent 12 into the batter’s box which accumulated seven more. In the fourth Logan Busta scored on a Caleb Kurtenbach double, who later raced home on Schmitt’s single. A double by Braylen Byrne doubled to drive in Schmitt and Aidan Holthaus, ending the game on the 15-run mercy rule.
Russell Nieman earned the win with two runs scored on one hit and one walk while the senior struck out three.
At the plate, Schmitt was 3-for-3 with a triple and six RBI to lead the Trojans. Byrne pounded out three hits, while Holthaus was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs.
The Red and White have one more game this week as the Trojans will be at New Hampton Friday in a junior varsity/varsity twinbill at 5:30 p.m. Next week begins with a trip to Kee Monday, June 10, for a varsity doubleheader at 5 p.m.
