One-stroke victory for Lady Trojans

By Becky Walz,

The Turkey Valley golf teams were back on their home course at Jackson Heights Thursday, splitting a co-ed dual with Clayton Ridge. The girls narrowly bested the Eagles by one stroke, 265 to 266, while the boys fell to the visitors, 209 to 181.
Firing a 52 for medalist honors was Trojan senior Ali Hoffert, carding four bogeys on the day.
“Ali’s only hiccup was on testy hole No. 9 as she carded a nine,” said Coach John Reicks. “I look for her to break 50 in the next couple of weeks.”
Tess Kuennen shaved four strokes from Tuesday’s meet, coming in with a 63, while Emma Hanson provided a 72 for the Trojans. Mariah Throndson’s 78, also counted for TV. Other Trojans on the course in junior varsity action were Bella Gruenberg with a 76 and Ana Ventura with a 90.
In boys’ action, junior Garrett Kurtenbach got back on track as co-medalist with a 43, sharing first-place honors with Kolin Severson of Clayton Ridge. Touring the course with a 53 was junior Jackson Vsetecka, with newcomer Cael Wickham carving out a 55. Veteran golfer Lance Schmitt also counted for the Trojans with a 58.
“Garrett shot a steady round with two pars and seven bogeys, including a spectacular save on hole No. 5 to salvage a bogey from way left across No. 6 fairway en route to his gold medal performance,” noted Coach Reicks.
Friday, the Trojans hosted a triangular with New Hampton and Sumner-Fred. Complete results from the meet will be available online only at decorahnewspapers.com. Monday’s meet between the Trojans and South Winn Warriors was postponed until Tuesday, May 4, Tuesday, April 20, as the Turkey Valley and South Winn pay a visit to Silvercrest Golf and Country Club to face off with Decorah.
