Warriors stay alive in postseason

The South Winn boys’ basketball team (14-8) edged a district win over Tripoli at home Monday, 72-63, to advance. Tripoli ends the season with a 13-9 overall record.
Both teams hit the hardwood running, with senior Keagen Streeter putting up the Warriors’ six points. Tripoli took the ball right to the room on each possession and claimed the advantage 19-12 after the opening period. South Winn fell behind by as many as seven in the second period, but a treys by Braiden Todd and a pair of threes by Kole Hageman spearheaded the comeback as the Warriors made up the difference and tied the game 31-31 on a Carson Wenthold bucket before the half.
Second half rally spurs Vikes to win

After a close first half that ended in a tie, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (12-7, 6-4 NEIC) put together a strong second half, defeating West Delaware (12-10) on the road, 57-44, Tuesday night.
The Vikings start the playoffs Monday, Feb. 20, at home at 7 p.m., and will once again square off with West Delaware as they begin their quest for state in Class 3A Substate 4. The winner moves on to face the winner of Marion (16-4) and Vinton-Shellsburg (3-17) in the substate semifinal Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., at a location to be determined.
Wildcats end 2022-23 season for Trojan girls

Try as they might, the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team could not keep pace offensively with Maquoketa Valley Tuesday night in the Class 1A Region 4 quarterfinal, ending the Trojans’ season with a 61-38 loss in Jackson Junction.
The Trojans finish the season with 17-6 overall record and was second in the Upper Iowa Conference. The Wildcats (15-9) advance to the regional semifinal to face Edgewood-Colesburg (12-11) Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
SW girls end season with No. 15 Falcons

For the second year in a row the South Winn girls’ basketball team (7-15) fell to No. 15 Aplington-Parkersburg (18-4) in the regional playoffs Tuesday, Feb. 14, on the road, ending its 2022-23 season.
Off to the big meet; Seven local grapplers headed to state

Seven Winneshiek County grapplers punched their ticket to the state wrestling tournament Saturday.
Three Viking wrestlers advanced from their Class 2A District Meet hosted by Decorah while four Warriors moved on from their Class 1A District Meet at MFL MarMac in Monona.
These wrestlers are all headed to the state wrestling tournament, which begins Wednesday and runs through championship Saturday, Feb. 15-18, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
It will be the first-time experience for six of the seven grapplers on the big stage.
Viking girls NEIC champs, finish undefeated

Facing Waverly-Shell Rock in the final contest of the season, the Class 4A No. 5 Decorah girls’ basketball team (19-2, 10-0 NEIC) knocked off the Go-Hawks (15-6, 8-2 NEIC) at home, 55-47.
Friday the Vikings outscored the Go-Hawks 19-16 after the first quarter, thanks to solid rebounding by Kylie O’Hara and Haley Gossman. W-SR wasn’t ready to roll over and give up and pulled within one, 29-28, at the half. In the third, the Vikings put together a solid quarter on both ends of the floor, forcing a three-minute Go-Hawk scoring drought to pull ahead, 44-33, with eight minutes to play. W-SR cut into the lead in the fourth, but Decorah held on.
Go-Hawks push past Decorah in second half

It was a rough two-game stretch for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (11-7, 6-4 NEIC) as the Vikings fell to Waverly-Shell Rock and Clear Creek-Amana over the weekend.
Trojans defeat West Central 33-13

A strong second half propelled the Turkey Valley girls basketball team (17-5) to a win Thursday night over West Central in the first round of the Class 1A girls’ playoffs.
The Blue Devils end the season 6-17. Turkey Valley advanced to face Maquoketa Valley (14-9) Tuesday, Feb. 14, in Jackson Junction at 7 p.m. The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to face the winner of Central Elkader/Edgewood-Colesburg game Friday, Feb. 17, in Elkader at 7 p.m.
SW on to quarterfinals with A-P

For the second season in a row, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (7-15) will be facing Aplington-Parkersburg in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals on the Falcons’ home court after defeating Postville Saturday. The Warriors advance to the game which will be played tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 14), in Aplington at 7 p.m.
Job well done; Viking swimmers compete at state

The Decorah boys swimmers who competed at the state meet ended the season with a bang Saturday in Iowa City. The team sent four events to the big meet, with all four improving on their times from districts.
Waukee won the team title with 304 points.
SW boys finish second in UIC

A slow start spelled trouble for the South Winn boys’ basketball team as the Warriors (13-8, 12-4 UIC) fell on the road at Waukon Monday. However, the Warriors bounced back and took control of Tuesday’s regular season finale with Clayton Ridge to secure the second spot in the Upper Iowa Conference.
Decorah keglers conclude on high note

As the boys went 10-0 and the girls 9-1 in duals, the Decorah bowling teams both finish at the top of the conference standings after defeating New Hampton Tuesday at Kingpin Entertainment Center.
In boys’ action, the Vikes bested the Chickasaws 2,850 to 2,604. Baker games were 227, 183, 181, 190 and 172.

Postseason starts this week

The road to state for basketball, boys wrestling and bowling will start this week for area teams. Postseason pairings for Turkey Valley and South Winn girls’ and boys’ basketball teams have been released. Decorah girls basketball will be competing in Class 4A, to be released later this week, while the Viking boys basketball will wait to see who they face next week.
Simon champion, others place for Vikes, Warriors

The masses came to watch the over 400 girls compete at the inaugural Iowa High School Athletic Union state wrestling tournament last week at Xtream Arena in Coralville. And Winneshiek County was well represented on and off the mats as fans packed the venue as wrestlers from Decorah, South Winn and Turkey Valley (New Hampton/Turkey Valley squad) had punched their tickets.
Knaack, three relays to state for Decorah swimmers

The Viking contingent will have lots to cheer about this weekend as Decorah will send four events to the state swim meet.
Decorah qualified one athlete in one individual event and all three relays to the state event. Last year, Decorah sent just one individual to compete in three events to the big dance.
Events are qualified based on having the 32 fastest individual and to 24 relay team times across the state. There are no classes in swimming; all schools compete against one another.
The state meet is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.
Viking boys get road win over Waukon

Going on the road in conference action, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (11-5, 6-3 NEIC) took care of host Waukon (2-16, 0-9 NEIC) Friday night, 56-49.
It was a slow start for both teams with a 2-2 battle going into the sixth minute of the opening period before either team scored again. By the end of the first, Decorah had edged the Indians, 10-7. That lead was extended to 21-16 at halftime. Waukon battled back in the third to tie it at 32-all with eight minutes left to play. While the Indians managed to have tied the game, the Vikings never relinquished the lead in the final period to take the victory back to Decorah.
No. 5 Vikes move to 18-2

It was another win for the Class 4A No. 5 Decorah girls’ basketball team (18-2, 9-0 NEIC) last week as the Vikings defeated Waukon (11-8, 5-4 NEIC) on the road, 61-42.
Controlling the tempo of the game early, Decorah pulled out to a 16-8 first quarter lead. Uncharacteristically the Vikes stumbled offensively in the second, allowing the Indians back into the contest at halftime but still maintained the advantage 24-20. That lead was pushed to 42-35 in the third and Decorah put the game away in the fourth, outscoring Waukon 19-7 in the final eight minutes.
Decorah keglers working to clinch conference title

With the Decorah boys’ bowling moving to 9-0 and girls to 8-1 for the season, both are in the hunt to close the season out as the best of the conference in duals. Friday night, the Vikings hosted Waverly-Shell Rock with both teams defeating the Go-Hawks at Kingpin Entertainment Center.
In boys’ action, Decorah ran away with the victory 3,023 to 2,346. Baker game scores were 176, 213, 182, 193 and 224.
Trojan girls finish second in UIC at 14-2

After picking up a crucial win earlier in the week, the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team claimed the second spot in the Upper Iowa Conference with two more victories Thursday and Friday. The Trojans posted a 14-2 UIC record and is currently 16-5 overall.
