The Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (12-7, 10-5 UIC) survived every punch Clayton Ridge threw at it Thursday and limited offensive opportunities for the Pirates Friday in a pair of double UIC wins late last week.

Turnovers, fouls hurt SW girls

A slow second half hurt the South Winn girls’ basketball team (6-14, 6-10 UIC) as the Warriors hosted MFL MarMac (13-7, 11-5 UIC) Friday night, falling 54-37.
The teams were nearly three minutes into the game before the first points fell through the hoop in the form of Morgan Kleve free throws. Four early SW fouls, two each on Morgan Kleve and Josie Tieskoetter, forced the Warriors to play with a younger squad on the floor, but kept ahead of the Bulldogs 6-5 after the first eight minutes. MFL MarMac built a slight 19-17 halftime lead and continued to roll in the second half.

SW boys stumble versus league leader Bulldogs

The South Winn boys’ basketball team faced a huge test Friday night, hosting the league leader MFL MarMac for a big Upper Iowa Conference tilt.
Despite a good showing by the Warriors, the Bulldogs (19-1, 15-0 UIC) remained unbeaten in the conference, taking care of the Warriors (12-7, 11-4 UIC), 76-68.

TV girls stun No. 7 Central Elkader, 41-40

They are probably still celebrating in Jackson Junction after the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (14-5, 13-2 UIC) redeemed a 30-point loss earlier in the season to Class 1A No. 7 Central Elkader (17-2, 13-1 UIC) with a 41-40 win Tuesday night.
While the Warriors struck first offensively, it was the Trojans who took control of the game to lead 13-9 after the opening period. In the second, TV kept Central from scoring in the first three minutes and held the visitors’ second chance shots to a minimum to lead 25-19 at halftime.

Boys swimming to compete at Dubuque Senior Saturday

The boys district swim meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 4, at 12 p.m.
Decorah will swim at Dubuque Senior and will compete against Cedar Falls, Clinton, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior, Iowa City West, Vinton-Shellsburg and Waterloo.

No. 6 Vikes roll over Independence

It was no trouble picking up the win for the Decorah girls’ basketball team Tuesday night as the Vikes (17-2, 8-0 NEIC) downed Independence (5-13) at home, 71-23.
Decorah led off the game with a 14-9 first quarter lead that exponentially grew in the second period as the Vikes outscored the visitors 30-2, to be on top at halftime, 44-11. Decorah continued to maintain its comfortable advantage throughout the second half to claim the easy victory.

Trojans grab 10th victory

Momentum is there for the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team after the Trojans (10-7, 8-5 UIC) had one of its best games on the hardwood Tuesday, defeating Central Elkader (7-11, 4-9 UIC) at home, 60-45.
The Trojans took a 16-7 lead after the first quarter and led 29-18 at halftime. It was the third quarter that put the game away as TV outscored the Warriors 22-13 during that time.

Warriors still eyeing second in UIC

With a shot at second place in the conference, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (12-6, 11-3 UIC) did what it needed to Monday and Tuesday night — picking up two more wins. The Warriors are currently second in the Upper Iowa Conference behind MFL MarMac and just ahead of Clayton Ridge.

While the South Winn girls’ basketball team worked hard to mount a comeback Monday, it wasn’t enough to top Kee High. However, the Warriors (6-13, 6-9 UIC) rebounded to top Postville Tuesday night.

Decorah regional champs, 10 move on to state

The Decorah girls’ wrestling team proved why it is one of the best in the state and ranked No. 5, after running away with the Region 7 title and qualifying 10 wrestlers for the state tournament following Friday’s tournament held at Luther College.
The Vikes garnered 266 points over No. 8 Anamosa who finished in second place with 191 with Mason City third with 163 points.
The top four in each weight class from each regional punched tickets to the first state meet sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, with a total of 32 girls advancing to state. The state meet will be held at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 2-3.

SW girls send four to state; Myers punches ticket

In the inaugural year of girls wrestling in the state of Iowa, South Winn will send four to the state-sanctioned event later this week. The Warriors were part of the Super Regional which competed at Luther College Friday with South Winn finishing fifth as a team with 116.5 points. No. 7 Osage won the Region 8 title with 243 points.
The top four in each weight class from each regional punched tickets to the first state meet sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, with a total of 32 girls advancing to state. The state meet will be held at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 2-3.
“Friday was a great day overall. We came knowing that we had three really good opportunities and a couple other chances to make something happen if we wrestled well. We had a couple very good rounds to start the day and put three in the finals,” said Coach Ethan Adams. “We saw many of our girls bring things in from the season and put them to work on the mat, which is continually exciting as I really feel like we’ve continued to improve throughout the year. I am extremely proud of all our girls.”

It was a big week for the Decorah girls’ and boys’ bowling teams as they competed at the conference team tournament and defeated North Iowa at home.

Vikings are best of NCSC…for fifth straight season

Saturday marked the fifth North Central Swim Conference title in a row for the Decorah boys’ swim team. The Vikes traveled to Cedar Rapids to compete in the championships where they tallied 479 points, which included 11 top-three placings. Vinton-Shellsburg was a distant second with 357 points.
“I am so proud of the way the boys swam — from our freshman scoring points to the depth of our relays — this was truly a team win for the Vikings. For the season, we had a record of 30-7,” said Coach Loran Storts.
Decorah had one individual champion winning two events. Dom Bigalk claimed the 200 freestyle in 1:56.48 and touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.60.

Decorah overwhelms NH, 70-36

Not even the weather could stop the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team (16-2, 8-0 NEIC) as the Vikings defeated New Hampton (7-10, 2-6 NEIC) at home Friday, 70-36.
Decorah created a large gap in the scoring in the first with a 24-10 advantage that grew to 49-25 by halftime. Solid Viking defense and opportunities scoring pushed Decorah over the top in the second half as the Vikes outscored the Chickasaws 23-11 for the win.

Vikes on four-game win streak

The Decorah boys’ basketball team is on roll, this time the Vikes (10-5, 5-3 NEIC) bested New Hampton (7-10, 3-5 NEIC) in NEIC action Friday night, 88-59.
Playing at home, Decorah took control early on. The Vikes went up 12-6 midway through the first period and led 22-18 at the end of the quarter. It remained a close battle throughout the second period, with Decorah up 38-35 at the half. Decorah continued to play tough going up by 10 at the end of the third, 55-45. The fourth quarter was when the Vikes put the game away, scoring 33 points.

Warriors crown two UIC champs, finish third

Despite graduating a lot of wrestlers from last year’s Upper Iowa Conference championship team, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team competed well Thursday at the individual tournament. The Warriors finished third with 171 points, behind MFL MarMac who had 220 points and North Fayette Valley with 218.
In addition, two Warrior matmen claimed titles with two others finishing second.
“I thought we wrestled well as we were able to get four wrestlers into the finals,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd. “We are still young, but I loved our effort and competitive spirit. We are getting healthier and our guys are still making some nice improvements. I think we are starting to peak and will have two weeks to get some work in before we step on the mat at the district tournament.”

Four Vikings finish runner-up

Decorah took on some difficult competition in the Northeast Iowa Conference wrestling tournament in Waukon Saturday, finishing fifth as a team with 117.5 points, despite having four Vikes in the finals.
Class 3A No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock picked up the team title with 314.5 points, well ahead of second-place Crestwood who garnered 197 points. New Hampton-Turkey Valley finished third with 178 points.

Fourth-quarter lifts Warriors over NFV, 54-49

It was a big comeback in the fourth quarter Friday night as the South Winn boys’ basketball team (10-6, 9-3 UIC) defeated North Fayette Valley (10-6, 9-4 UIC) in West Union, 54-49.
The TigerHawks took the early lead over the Warriors 14-10 following the first eight minutes of action and opened the margin to 26-17 by halftime. As South Winn worked to close the gap, NFV maintained a comfortable advantage through the third to lead, 42-30, with one quarter remaining. That is when the Warriors went to work on both ends of the floor, outscoring the home team 24-7 and bring home the win, closing the game on a 20-5 run in the last five minutes.

SW girls fall to TigerHawks

The South Winn girls’ basketball team (5-12, 5-8 UIC) fell behind early Friday night and never recovered, losing to North Fayette Valley (11-5, 10-3 UIC) in West Union, 58-21.
Things didn’t look good from the beginning, with the Warriors scoring just four points in the first eight minutes to trail 15-4 after the first quarter. The TigerHawks continued to plow ahead in the second quarter. At the halftime break, the TigerHawks led, 37-12. The Warriors scored eight points in the third frame and were held to one in the final period.

Twin wins for Trojan girls

Earlier this week it was a tale of two totally different ball games for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (13-5, 12-2 UIC) as they narrowly defeated non-conference foe Crestwood and bested West Central.
