Monday, January 16, 2023 9:24 pm
The Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (10-4, 10-1 UIC) ran past Tripoli (1-11) Thursday night, defeating the visitors 60-13.
It took no time for the Trojans to take the lead in the non-conference contest, with a 14-7 advantage following the first quarter. TV extended its lead to 32-9 by halftime and outscored the Panthers 28-4 in the second half.
“We did an outstanding job defending as we limited Tripoli’s second-chance opportunities. I also liked the way we forced tempo creating easy baskets for us,” said Coach Steve Hoffert.

It was another two tallies in the win column late last week for the Decorah girls’ basketball team (13-2, 6-0) as the Vikings picked up victories over Charles City and West Delaware.
“I see a lot of nice things happening on both the defensive and offensive ends of the floor,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl.
Keglers continue to roll in the wins
Monday, January 16, 2023 9:22 pm
It was a different opponent with the same result for the Decorah girls’ and boys’ bowling teams and the Vikings handed Tripoli a pair of defeats Friday night at KingPin Entertainment Center.
With the 3,175 to 2,206 victory, the boys’ improved to 6-0 for the season, while the girls are 5-1 with their win of 2,496 to 1,477.
The Viking varsity boys had the second highest team score in the program’s history. Baker game scores were 215, 264, 236, 199 and 233.
At the forefront of the boys’ team scores was senior Grady Brauer (231-258-489) with Will Marx (200-209-409) not far behind. A couple of close games for Viking boys
Monday, January 16, 2023 9:20 pm
The Decorah boys’ basketball team (7-5, 3-3 NEIC) had a couple tight games to wrap up last week’s action, dropping a close contest to Charles City and edging Wahlert Catholic in the final minute.
Another close one
Back on their home court after several road games, Decorah came up short in its bid to claim victory over Charles City (8-3, 4-1 NEIC) Friday night, 78-69.
“Our guys battled hard, and the effort was there, we just missed a couple of key execution possessions at the end of the 1st half that cost us momentum. Give Charles City credit, they are long, and a very athletic team that is going to win a lot of games this year. We just have to keep improving with each game, not get our heads down and keep competing each day,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
DHS swimmers second at Rusty Garst Invite
Monday, January 16, 2023 9:19 pm
It’s been a long couple of weeks for the Decorah boys swim team, but one wouldn’t know it when they see Saturday’s finishes at the Rusty Garst Invite. As the squad, the Vikings were the team runner-up with 225 points behind Sioux City who tallied 296.
“This team continues to swim strong. It is that time of the season where we are competing on tired bodies — longer practices, four away meets in 11 days including 18 hours of bus travel time. We had significant time drops in two of the three relays plus 14 individual season best performances,” noted Coach Loran Storts.

The Vikes kicked off the game with a 15-11 lead after the first eight minutes and stretch their advantage to 32-20 by halftime. It was a lead that the Bulldogs could never erase as Decorah continued to roll in the third quarter, leading 48-33 with eight minutes to play.

Thursday, January 12, 2023 8:09 pm
Taking on a familiar opponent outside the Northeast Iowa Conference, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (11-2, 5-0 NEIC) more than doubled up on MFL MarMac (8-5, 6-3 UIC) Monday night, 57-25, in Monona.
The Vikes controlled the tempo of the non-conference game from start to finish taking a commanding 24-3 lead after the first eight minutes. By halftime Decorah’s lead had been extended to 44-13. SW matmen celebrate seniors
Thursday, January 12, 2023 8:08 pm
Taking the mats at home for the final time this season, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team hosted Sumner-Fredericksburg and Crestwood, going 1-1 Tuesday night.
The Warriors handed Sumner-Fred a lopsided loss 63-18 before falling to Crestwood 52-25.
“We had a pretty tough night and although we lost to a very solid Crestwood team, I was happy that we were able to make some adjustments. We were able to turn some matches around with some Sumner-Fred kids who we had lost to this weekend,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd. “I think the team needs to continue working hard in several areas and become more consistent from night to night as we finish this season up in the next month or so.”

With Central opening with a couple treys, the South Winn Warriors were down early 11-6. Picking up the pace, SW set the stage for a comeback to tie the score at 20-all at halftime. The visiting Warriors took the lead 38-35 with one quarter of play remaining and kept grinding to pull out the win.
“The whole game was a grind and we had to deal with quite a few foul problems. We had some guys step up and give us big minutes and help seal the win,” said Coach Derek Taylor.
Second half struggles doom TV
Thursday, January 12, 2023 8:07 pm
Consistency was an issue Tuesday night as the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (6-4, 5-3 UIC) fell to North Fayette Valley (6-4, 6-2 UIC) at home, 69-50.
Initially the Trojans got down 11-4 in the first quarter before finishing the period on a 7-0 run to tie it up 11-11. While the second quarter was won by the TigerHawks, TV only faced a seven-point deficit, 32-25. The turning point in the contest was the third frame were NFV pulled away 53-32, a shortfall TV couldn’t recover from.
No. 8 Central too much for SW
Wednesday, January 11, 2023 8:05 pm
The South Winn girls’ basketball team (3-9, 3-6 UIC) went ice cold Tuesday night in Elkader, scoring just nine points in the game while falling to Class 1A No. 8 Central Elkader (11-0, 7-0 UIC), 49-9.
The Warriors went without a point in the first quarter, with Central leading 18-0. Josie Hemesath stopped the bleeding early in the second with a basket, but that is all SW would get as the visiting Warriors trailed 35-2 at halftime. A pair of free throws in the third period would be all South Winn would put up as Central continued to pull away, 54-4, with eight minutes to play. A trey by Aubrey Willey and a bucket by Allison Hageman would wrap up the scoring for South Winn in the fourth.

No. 6 Decorah come out on top of No. 11 W-SR
Monday, January 9, 2023 8:02 pm
It was a tough test Friday night on the road as the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team (10-2, 5-0 NEIC) defeated No. 11 Waverly-Shell Rock (6-3, 3-1 NEIC) in Waverly, 60-48.
It’s just the second time since January 2010 that Decorah has gotten the best of the Go-Hawks.
The Vikes were in a tussle from the beginning, going up 18-13 at the end of the first quarter. The game was still too close for comfort at halftime with Decorah holding on to a 33-27 lead. In the third, the Vikes opened the gap a little more and led 47-39 with eight minutes left to play. The Red and Blue maintained and extended its lead in the fourth to take home the win.
Holm champion, Warriors sixth at Tripoli
Monday, January 9, 2023 8:00 pm
It was a busy start to the second semester as the South Winn wrestling teams competed at Postville Thursday and the 56th annual Tripoli Invite Saturday.
“Monday the junior varsity wrestled in Osage and wrestled well, these younger guys are continuing to make some nice improvements,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd. “Thursday we headed to Postville where the team went 2-2 in duals. The nice thing about getting back into competition is, that’s where you are reminded of your current weaknesses. We were exposed in some areas and are able to focus on some of those specific areas. Saturday both JV and Varsity went to Tripoli which had a very competitive group of teams, highlighted by several top 10 teams in the state. Overall, our kids wrestled to their seed, but I think at the end of the day, we felt as a team that we could have performed better and had several wins that we let get away.”
