Warrior girls finish ninth at Central

Getting on the mats for the second time last week, the South Winn girls’ wrestling team competed at the 28-team Central Invite in Elkader Friday, finishing ninth with 75 points and one champion. Eighth-ranked Decorah took home the team title with 208 points while No. 4 East Buchanan was second with 170 points.
Seventh-ranked Izzy Kipp was the lone champion of the night at 190 pounds. A first-round bye placed the senior in the quarterfinal match against Avery Hoffmeyer of North Central where Kipp picked a pin in 1:00. It took Kipp 40 seconds to put Southeast Polk’s Grace Ellsbury on her back in the semifinal and 1:43 to throw No. 9 Alyson Krum of East Buchanan for the title.

Warriors win at Clayton Ridge

A road win is always good, especially when its without one of the best rebounders in the Upper Iowa Conference.
The South Winn boys’ basketball team (6-4, 5-2 UIC) did just that Friday night, defeating Clayton Ridge (8-3, 5-2 UIC) in Guttenberg, 59-50.
Currently second in rebounds in the UIC, Warrior senior Keagen Streeter is sidelined with an injury; however, with a bench filled with talent has stepped up to fill the void.

South Winn girls top Eagles

After dropping Tuesday’s contest, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (3-8, 3-5 UIC) is back in the win column after claiming the 33-28 victory over Clayton Ridge (4-7, 3-5 UIC) in Guttenberg Friday night.
With both teams struggling to get offense rolling, the Warriors held a 5-4 lead after the first eight minutes, a one-point advantage that disappeared in the second quarter. At halftime the two UIC teams were deadlocked at 13. The difference in the game came in the third period as South Winn put up 11 points and kept the Eagles in single digits again. Clayton Ridge managed to get one point closer in the final period, but it was the Warriors taking the “W.”

Decorah boys put up strong effort

Although the Decorah boys’ basketball team (5-4, 3-2 NEIC) played well as a team, it didn’t translate into a win as the Vikings fell to Waverly-Shell Rock (5-3, 4-0 NEIC) on the road Friday night, 79058
Decorah fell behind 18-11 after the first quarter and matched the Go-Hawks point-for-point in the second as both teams sank 24 points to make it 42-35 at halftime. W-SR stretched its lead by two in the third before going on a fourth-quarter run for the win.

Viking girls win duals over Osage, Holmen

Hosting a triangular Tuesday night, the Decorah girls’ wrestling team picked up a pair of dual victories, edging Osage 37-33 and defeating Holmen (Wis.) 54-30.
Seven Vikings went 2-0 for the night. Those picking up multiple wins included fifth-ranked Chloe Sheffield (105), No. 8 Ashley Bjork (130), Ana Simon (135), No. 10 McKenzie Tollefson (140), No. 9 Mairi Sessions (155), No. 1 Naomi Simon (170) and Madysen Lippe (235).
The Vikes are at Waverly-Shell Rock tonight (Thursday, Jan. 5) at 6:15 p.m., then travel to Elkader Friday, Jan. 6, for a tournament that begins at 4:30 p.m.

Trojans pull away from Postville

Fans of fast breaks, hot offense and driving to the basket were in for a treat Tuesday night in Jackson Junction as the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (4-3, 4-2 UIC) hosted Postville (1-8, 1-6 UIC).
When the final whistle blew, the Trojans came out on top, winning 63-34 against the Pirates.
After the first eight minutes, Turkey Valley led 15-5 and extended its advantage to 33-18 at halftime. The Trojans outscored the visitors 22-7 in the third period to put the game out of the Pirates’ reach.

TV girls win big over Postville, 64-29

The Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (6-3, 6-1 UIC) ran past Postville (0-9, 0-7 UIC) Tuesday night, defeating the visitors 64-29 at home.
The Trojans had the game solidly in control after the first eight minutes with a 25-7 lead. By halftime the advantage stretched to 26-16 and TV kept the Pirates in single digits in the third and fourth periods to claim the conference win.

Viking boys secure seven golds

The Decorah boys’ swim team got back in the water Tuesday night at Vinton-Shellsburg, competing against the Vikings in a dual.
Decorah placed first in 7 of the 11 events, winning 59 to 35.
All three relays won gold. Isaac Knaack, Mason Cote, Simon Kutz and Dylan Hogan won the 160-yard medley relay in 1:23.87. Combining their efforts in the 160-yard free relay for the win in 1:18.34 were Quinn Bauman, Dominic Bigalk, Hogan and Douglas Bentley. Winning the 320-yard free relay with a time of 2:48.64 were John Starrett, Knaack, Cote and Bigalk.

Vikings tame Cougars 66-37

A big performance by junior Yazmeen Whitsitt propelled the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team (9-2, 5-0 NEIC) to a 66-37 victory over previously unbeaten Class 2A No. 6 Cascade (8-1) Tuesday at home.
The Vikings quickly doubled up on the Cougars with a 16-8 lead after the first eight minutes. Decorah continued to pound the ball and had a comfortable 27-17 lead at halftime. The Red and Blue kept the visitors at bay in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 39-20 for the win.

Meyer wins title at Osage

The South Winn girls’ wrestling team opened 2023 at the Osage tournament Monday in a tie for seventh place in the team standings and crowning one champion.
Kaydn Meyer won the title at 120 pounds with a pair of falls and two decisions. The day began with the Warrior pinning Mia Ahrendsen of Cedar Falls in 1:51. Moving on to the quarterfinal, Meyer defeated Destiny Hoeppner of Cedar Falls by a 4-0 decision. It took her 22 seconds to pin East Buchanan’s Sammi Isham in the semifinals. Facing Zoey Johnson in the finals, Meyer claimed victory by a 6-3 decision.

Early deficit costly for SW boys

After falling behind early, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (5-4, 4-2 UIC) couldn’t make up the difference, falling at Class 2A No. 10 MFL MarMac (9-0, 6-0 UIC) Tuesday night, 83-72.
The Warriors went down 26-16 after the first eight minutes. That lead was extended to 43-29 at halftime. The Bulldogs remained in front, holding a 63-41 advantage after three frames. Despite a big 31-point final period, the Warriors were unable to pull out front, giving up the conference game.

Warrior girls fall in Monona 53-41

A slow start on the road was too much for the South Winn girls’ basketball team to overcome Tuesday night as the Warriors (2-8, 2-5 UIC) fell to MFL MarMac (7-3, 5-2 UIC) in Monona, 53-41.
South Winn put up just six points in the first quarter to trail 11-6. Both offenses picked up the pace in the second period leaving the Bulldogs with a 23-16 halftime lead. MFL MarMac went up by as many as 10 in the third before South Winn cut it to 41-32 with eight minutes remaining.

No. 6 Decorah sails past Cadets

It took a gritty performance Tuesday night but the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team (6-1, 2-0 NEIC) knocked off Crestwood (4-2, 0-2 NEIC) at home, 60-31.
Starting strong, the Viking offense posted 22 points in the first period to lead 22-4, which proved to be the difference in the game. The two NEIC squads had a level playing field from there on out, scoring identical numbers in each the second, third and fourth quarters.

SW boys cage NFV

A big first half performance by the South Winn boys’ basketball team (3-2, 3-1 UIC) propelled the Warriors to a 54-33 victory over North Fayette Valley (2-3, 2-2 UIC) Tuesday night at home.
The Warriors hit the hardwood running with an 18-8 lead after the first. The SW defense did its job in the second period, limiting the TigerHawks to three points to give the Warriors a 32-11 halftime advantage.

Tough night on mats for Warriors

Things weren’t quite up to par Tuesday for the South Winn wrestling team as the Warrior grapplers went 1-2 Tuesday night at Oelwein.
South Winn defeated the host, Oelwein, 48-30, and dropped close matches to Anamosa, 39-30, and East Buchanan, 45-36.
Jamison Zweibahmer (106), Bo Wangsness (120), Collin Holm (145) and Kyle Kuboushek (152) all went 3-0 for the night. 
There were limited matches for the girls during the evening. South Winn girls picking up match wins during the night included Josie Hageman (115), Kaydn Meyer (120) and Addison Timp (145).

Warriors slowed by NFV defense

Slow offense doomed the South Winn girls’ basketball team (1-6, 1-4 UIC) at home as the Warriors fell to North Fayette Valley (3-2, 3-1 UIC) Tuesday, 49-22.
The Warriors scored eight points in the first quarter to trail 13-8 after eight minutes. The offense struggled more in the second, allowing NFV to a 19-12 lead at the half. The TigerHawks kept the pressure going in the third, allowing just two Warrior points in the third to extend the lead to 31-14.

Luther College adds mens and womens bowling

Luther College President Jenifer K. Ward and Athletic Director Renae Hartl announced the addition of men’s and women’s bowling to the athletic department on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
“We are excited to introduce men’s and women’s bowling as the first new sports at Luther College since 1990. In addition to allowing us to recruit students of high academic promise with an opportunity to continue in a sport popular in high school athletics programs, we are happy to work with the newly opened King Pin Entertainment Center to advance local partnerships in a great new facility,” said Ward on the addition of bowling.

Boys’ basketball teams give back

When the JV and Varsity boys’ basketball teams from Decorah and Sumner-Fredericksburg met recently for the Achieve Scrimmage match, they accomplished much more than just the opportunity to compete against each other. Donations were collected for admission into the scrimmage, and they were split between the schools’ local food pantries as $200 was directed to the Decorah Community Food Pantry and $200 went to the His Hands Food Pantry in Oran.
The Decorah boys’ basketball team met with Matt Tapscott, director of the Decorah Community Food Pantry, to learn more about food insecurity in northeast Iowa and to present the $200 check.

Kipp first, girls sixth at inaugural SW girls’ invite

Thirteen teams converged on Luther College Regents Center Friday night for the inaugural South Winn girls’ invitational. New champions were crowned, including the Warriors’ own Izzy Kipp.
Finishing the night with 86 points, South Winn finished sixth in the team standings which was won by Waverly-Shell Rock who tallied 243.5 points.

SW grapplers eighth at home invite

The mats were packed Saturday in Calmar as the South Winn wrestling team hosted nine other squads at the South Winn Invite, including teams from Nebraska and Minnesota.
Class 2A No. 1 Osage took the team title with 286.5 points, while Class 2A No. 2 West Delaware was second with 185 points. South Winn claimed eighth with 93 points.
