SW girls to represent Winneshiek County at state – Take aim a second straight title

The South Winn girls’ cross country team, ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, will have the chance to defend its Class 1A title this week after winning the state-qualifying race Thursday in Cascade. The Decorah girls’ and boys’ teams finished fifth and did not qualify.
In Class 1A, the first two teams, plus the first 10 individuals qualify from each of the Class 1A state qualifying meets advance to state, while in Class 3A the top three teams, plus the first 15 individual place winners qualify for the state meet.
The state cross country meet is Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, in Fort Dodge at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course. The Class 1A girls run Friday, Oct. 28, at 10:30 a.m.
Trojans to face No. 6 Rebels Friday at home

The Turkey Valley football team is moving on in the eight-man playoffs.
The Trojans (6-1) defeated Ed-Co (4-3) Friday night in Jackson Junction, 71-42. The Red and White will now host sixth-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck (8-1) Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m.
“This was a hard fought game as Ed-Co kept making plays to keep them in the game,” said Coach Mark Scott. “We had some big plays on offense and defense. On defense we had a couple of red zone stops, two big interceptions by Noah Hanson and Carson Busta, along with a huge fourth-down sack by Ryan Franzen just before halftime that gave us an opportunity to score.”
Decorah brings home all golds

Utilizing some swimmers in different events Thursday night, the Decorah girls’ swim and dive team had a strong night in the water at Algona, winning 150 to 44, and brining home gold medals in each event.
Striking gold first was the 200-yard medley relay of Maeley Nefzger, Katerina Kovarik, Julia Alberts and Paige Werner turning in a time of 2:03.54. Werner then turned around and got right back in the water to win the 200-yard freestyle as an individual in 2:10.62. Winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:41.32 was Grace Stegen.
No. 5 Denver stops Warriors

The came to an end on Wednesday evening as the South Winn volleyball team fell to No. 5 Denver 0-3 in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals.
Set scores were 12-25, 8-25 and 10-25.
The Warriors end the season 11-19. Denver (34-10) faced Aplington-Parkersburg Monday, Oct. 24, in the regional semifinals. The finals will be played Wednesday, Oct. 26, at a location to be determined.
Eight perfect scores in week 5

It must have been an easier week, or just a lot of lucky guesses, as there were eight perfect entries into the Pigskin Picks football contest for week five. It came down to the tie-breakers for the second week in a row.
Turkey Valley scored the most points of a single team with 69 as the first tie-breaker. In the second tie-breaker the combined score of Turkey Valley and West Central was 105 points and was the difference in the first and second prizes. The top-three individuals all guessed 68 in the first tie-breaker.
Decorah’s Sue Roby came out on top with a second tie-breaker guess of 92. It came down to David Luhman’s guess of 88 that settled him into second, while Dale B. Olson of Decorah had a second tie-breaker guess of 78 to take third.
Of the those missing games, most common ones were Crestwood falling to Osage, Lanesboro over Mabel-Canton and TCU defeating Oklahoma State.
Vikes’s season comes to a close

The season came to an end in the regional semifinals for the Decorah volleyball team as the Vikings fell to Charles City in a close 2-3 battle Thursday in Charles City.
Set scores were 19-25, 25-14, 25-20, 21-25 and 13-15.
Decorah ends the year 19-13, while Charles City (27-12) will face Western Dubuque (23-10) in the finals today, Tuesday, Oct. 26.
Decorah football team ends 2022 season

It isn’t the way any team wants to finish the season, without a playoff berth; however, there was a lot of growth throughout the season for the Decorah football team.
In the final week of the regular season — and the final game for the 2022 Vikes — Decorah (3-6, 0-4) fell to No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock (9-0, 5-0) at home, 32-13.
Decorah finished fifth in the district. Waverly-Shell Rock and Western Dubuque (6-3, 4-1) earned the two playoff spots from District 2, with only the top-two teams in each district advancing to the playoffs.
“Waverly-Shell Rock is an excellent team, deserving of their high ranking. We are very proud of our players for how hard they played, and our defense was excellent. The score was 11-0 part way through the third quarter. We could not generate much offense until late in the game, but we never quit,” said Coach Pat Trewin.
To the max; Vikes pushed to five sets, prevail over MC

The Decorah volleyball team battled Tuesday night, forcing five sets against Mason City in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals.
“Wow, what a match. It would’ve been a great match to watch if you weren’t invested in the outcome,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “Our kids didn’t quit fighting.”
In the end, it was the Vikings (19-12) that pulled out the victory, defeating the Riverhawks 3-2. Set scores were 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 12-25 and 15-12.
Warriors advance to round two

The season continues for the South Winn volleyball team as the Warriors knocked off Postville Monday night in Class 2A Region 5 first-round action in Calmar.
South Winn improves to 11-18 and faced No. 5 Denver (33-10) Wednesday, Oct. 19 in the regional quarterfinals. The regional semifinals are set for Monday, Oct. 24, at Denver, with the final Wednesday, Oct. 26. Other teams in the bracket are Aplington-Parkersburg (21-17), Central Spring (18-13), No. 9 Grundy Center (29-12), MFL MarMac (9-18), Lake Mills (29-7) and Belmond-Klemme (11-20). Postville ends the season 1-19.
Trojans bow out of the postseason Monday

After winning a share of the Upper Iowa Conference title, the Turkey Valley volleyball team had its hopes of going far in the postseason crushed by Edgewood-Colesburg Monday at home.
Turkey Valley ends the year 17-16. Ed-Co (15-19) moved on to the Class 1A Region 6 quarterfinals Wednesday, Oct. 19, against North Linn (20-10). The regional semifinal will be held Monday, Oct. 24, with the regional final set for Wednesday, Oct. 26.
Set scores were 25-23, 24-26, 11-25 and 23-25.
Wagner earns gold for SW; Warrior girls win UIC

Make it three Upper Iowa Conference titles in row for the South Winn girls’ cross country team as all seven harriers placed in the top 15 to earn all-conference honors Thursday in Luana. With 32 points the Lady Warriors defended their Class 1A No. 3 ranking and dominated the field over North Fayette Valley who was the runner-up with 50 points.
In the boys’ race, the Warriors garnered 77 points, finished fifth in a team race and had one harrier in the top 15. Winning the boys’ title with 57 points was Class 1A No. 10 Clayton Ridge followed by MFL MarMac with 62 points.
Trojans claim share of UIC crown

In a highly anticipated regular season finale in Calmar, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (17-15, 7-1 UIC) secured a conference championship with the 3-0 win over South Winn (10-18, 6-2 UIC).
The Warriors finished outright third in the league with a record of 6-2 with their only other loss to Clayton Ridge who splits the title with Turkey Valley.
Third conference title in a row for Vikings

The Decorah girls swim and dive team seized its third conference title in a row at the conclusion of Saturday’s meet held at Luther College.
The Vikings totaled 350 points points to secure the top team spot, with NCMP Aquagirls finishing second with 321.
In addition, Rebecca Bruening was named to the all-academic team.
State qualifying meets this week

State qualifying meet sites for cross country were announced last week.
Girls and boys run at the same site, with the Class 3A and 4A races taking place Wednesday, Oct. 19, and the Class 1A and 2A on the courses Thursday, Oct. 20.
The girls race starts at 4 p.m., with the boys at 4:30 p.m. The first three teams, plus the first 15 individual place winners from each site qualifies for the state meet in Class 3A, with the top two teams and top 10 individual runners in Class 1A advancing to state from each site.
Trojans will face Ed-Co…again

Undefeated in district action, the Turkey Valley football team claimed that district title outright with the 73-32 win over West Central (4-5, 2-2) Friday night at home.
The Trojans (6-1, 5-0) earned the bid to the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the district and will face Edgewood-Colesburg (4-3) in the first round Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. The two teams squared off in the season opener with Turkey Valley coming out on top, 46-26.
Offense alive in 45-6 win

For one of the few times this season, the Decorah varsity football coaches could relax a little on the sidelines and enjoy the show as the Vikings (3-5, 1-3) defeated Waterloo East (0-8, 0-4) Friday night on the road, 45-6.
“It was great to win another game, and this was a total team effort. Each phase of the game played well, and every player was able to get in the game and contribute. Our offensive and defensive lines controlled the line-of-scrimmage and really showed the improvement that has happened throughout the year. Our backfield blocked and ran the ball well. Our coaches had a great game plan and executed it well. Our team stuck together and had each other’s backs through some tough losses. We have worked hard as a team, and it was rewarding to play well and win,” said Coach Pat Trewin.
Warriors struggle to contain EB ground game

It wasn’t the way the South Winn football team (2-6, 2-4) wanted to end the season, but with numerous injuries piling up as of late, the Warriors couldn’t stop East Buchanan (7-1, 5-1. Friday night the Warriors dropped the final game of the 2022 season 69-13 at home.
“This was a tough way to end the season. The entire coaching staff is very proud of our kids for hanging in there despite the adversity with all the injuries to their teammates,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “We will miss our five senior players and one senior manager, who stuck it out for four years. They were so great to work with and we cannot thank them enough for their leadership with the younger players on this team.”
Week four goes to Vick

With week four of the Pigskin Picks contest in the books, it was a three-way tie for first with two incorrectly guessed games that came down to both the first and second tie-breakers.
Decorah’s Curtis Vick and Ryan Busta of Fort Atkinson were both three away from the first tie-breaker. Mabel-Canton scored the most points of any one team with Vick guessing 62 and Busta 56. It came down to the second tie-breaker of the highest combined score of one game which was the overtime game between Turkey Valley and Tripoli at 78. Vick’s guess of 80 was the closest earning him the top prize for week four, while Busta guess of 92 placed him second. Third place went to Laura Lechtenberg of Calmar, also missing two games, but guessing 67 in the first tie-breaker.
Most commonly missed games were Decorah falling to Marion, Illinois State over UNI and Crestwood besting Clear Lake.
Regional swim sites announced

The Decorah girls swim and dive team will compete at the Dubuque Hempstead regional.
The regional diving competition, which also will be held at Dubuque Hempstead, is Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. The champion from each regional site (a total of six), plus the next highest scoring 24 divers qualify for the state meet.
The swimming competition is Saturday, Nov. 5, at 12 p.m. Other teams at Dubuque Hempstead include Cedar Falls, Davenport North, Dubuque Senior, Dubuque Wahlert, Iowa City High and Waterloo West.
Vikings suffer defeats at NEIC tourney

The Decorah volleyball team (18-12, 2-8 NEIC) will look to put the Northeast Iowa Conference tournament behind them as they open the postseason. The Vikes went 0-5 at the NEIC event and look to get back in the win column.
The Vikings host Mason City in the first round of Class 4A Region 4 action tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 18), at 7 p.m. A win puts Decorah up against NEIC foe Charles City on the Comets’ home court Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
