Schmitt, Klimesh see season end

The season ended for Turkey Valley’s Oliver Schmitt and South Winn’s Shaun Klimesh.
The Upper Iowa Conference pair competed at the Class 1A District meet at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls, hosted by East Buchanan.
The top two teams and top four individuals from each district advanced to the state meet.

Viking girls take loss at Denver

The Decorah girls’ soccer team (5-12) concluded a string of away games Monday in Denver. The Vikings wrapped up their regular season play against the Cyclones, coming away with a loss at 0-2. 

Watch out Drake, 23 events headed to state

Everything is looking good for a Viking takeover of Drake Stadium this week.
After a lengthy wait for one district to run Friday, the Decorah track teams learned they would be sending a combined 23 events to the state meet. 
The girls produced 121 points to finish as the runner-up at the state-qualifying meet at home Thursday, producing 11 entries to state. Epworth won the team title with 132 points.
The boys came through with 119 points, good for third overall behind Epworth’s 159.5 and Waverly-Shell Rock’s 121. In total, the boys will have 12 events at state.
The state track meet runs Thursday through Saturday, May 18-20, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Pack your bags Warrior and Trojan fans.
The South Winn track teams will have 12 events take the Blue Oval at the state track meet, while Turkey Valley will have 10.
The Warriors boys had five events, while the girls had seven make the big stage. For the Trojans was five girls and three boys’ events punching tickets to the state meet at the state-qualifying meet Thursday at Ed-Co. As a team the Trojan girls finished in a three-way tie for fourth with 66 points, while South Winn garnered seventh with 62 points.  North Linn took the team title with 91 points. In the boys’ team race the Warriors collected fifth place with 72.50 points, while the Trojans had 43 points, good for seventh. Wapsie Valley won the meet with 111 points.

Klimesh, Schmitt advance to districts

The South Winn and Turkey Valley boys’ golf teams competed at the IHSAA 1A Sectional at Wood’s Edge Golf Course in Edgewood on Wednesday, May 11, with each school sending a linkster on to district competition.
As teams, the Trojans finished the day with a 403 in fourth place, six strokes ahead of the Warriors. Medalist of the meet was Jack Wiskus of Ed-Co with an 81, runner-up was Starmont’s Garrett Waterhouse with an 83.

Franzen continues golf season

It was the first round of Class 1A regional competition for the South Winn and Turkey Valley girls’ golf teams at the Tri City Golf Course near Luana Friday, May 13. The hilly terrain and warm, windy conditions created trouble for many golfers, especially on the back nine at the end of a grueling and tiring day.
When the last ball was put in the cup, Ed-Co was the regional champs with a 427 with Starmont fashioning a 455 to advance to the next round. South Winn came through with a 478 in fourth place, while Turkey Valley carved out a 527, finishing seventh. Ed-Co linksters swept the top two honors.

The Decorah girls’ golf team had their final meets of the regular season last week, first hosting Caledonia and one Waukon golfer Thursday, then facing Charles City Friday.

The Decorah boys’ tennis team competed at Districts Monday, May 9, at Luther College for the right to move the team forward in state competition and for individuals/doubles teams to qualify as well.  
Eight teams add two single players and two doubles teams into brackets in single elimination tournament format, with a singles win giving the team two points and a doubles win giving the team three points. Competing in the tourney with Decorah were teams from Aplington-Parkersburg, Clear Lake, Hampton-Dumont, Independence, Oelwein, Waverly-Shell Rock and Western Dubuque.

After playing four games in the last four days, plus playing in heat and humidity for the first time, the toll had been taken on the Decorah girls’ soccer team. However, mental toughness and endurance by the Vikes put together a late charge for the 2-0 win over North Fayette Valley in Elgin Monday night.

Boys pull wind out from under Eagles

The Decorah boys’ soccer team put a mark back in the win column Monday after their win streak was broken over the weekend in Waverly. The Vikes (9-3) put the ball in goal twice in the first half and three times in the second to defeat Clayton Ridge (6-6) in Guttenberg, 5-1.

Decorah girls pull out slim 4-3 win over Independence

“What’s up with the weather? It finally warms up and what do we get? 35 mph winds and 89 degrees. Players tried to adapt but it was tough,” pointed out Decorah girls’ tennis coach Larry Berland.
However, Decorah found what it took to pull out a slim 4-3 victory on the Independence courts Monday. Leading 4-2 after singles, Decorah only needed one victory in doubles to win the match. No. 2 and No. 3 doubles played well but just could not come up with a winning formula. Meanwhile, the No. 1 doubles team of Annalise Skrade and Mara Holland had fallen behind 0-5 in their eight-game pro-set. 

Warrior, Trojan boys finished third, fourth in UIC

The 2022 Upper Iowa Conference boys’ meet was a wind-blown affair with sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph coupled with gusts near 50 mph at times. It made the meet a matter of survival as the UIC traversed the Tri-City golf course near Luana received nearly three inches of rain the day before as well.
South Winn and Turkey Valley finished together as the teams battled the elements. The Warriors ended the day with 407 strokes, three ahead of the Trojans.

Vikings compete in NEIC tourney

Decorah made the short trek to the Waukon Golf and Country Club Monday to compete in the annual Northeast Iowa Conference tournament, finishing fifth.
New Hampton and Waverly-Shell Rock ran away with the championship tying at 406. Charles City came in third with 494, followed by Crestwood with 510. The Vikes finished the day with 550 and Waukon had no team score.

Best in the area again as Vikes sweep NEIC titles

Once again the Decorah track and field teams dominated at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, this time at Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday.
The girls picked up their 17th NEIC crown in a row. Winning nine events and taking second in five, Decorah racked up 160.50 points, while New Hampton finished second with 142.
The boys won their sixth title in a row by scoring 162 points, edging out Waverly-Shell Rock who garnered 158.50 points. The Vikings won nine of the 19 events on the way to the victory.

SW boys claim UIC crown second year in a row

It was a close one.
But it makes it two years in a row for the South Winn boys track and field team claiming the Upper Iowa Conference title, held Thursday in Postville.
The Warrior boys won the team title with 132 points, while North Fayette Valley finished second with 130. Turkey Valley garnered 87 points to finished fifth.
Central Elkader was crowned the girls’ champion with 135, ahead of NFV with 120 and Turkey Valley’s 111 points. South Winn ended the night with 85 points in fifth place.
