Finally getting the weather to cooperate, the Decorah boys’ tennis team ended the dual portion of the season on a positive note, winning 2-of-3 matches last week.

Everything is coming together at the right time for the South Winn golf teams as their scores continue to lower with personal best tallies peaking just before the postseason. In a make-up meet from earlier this season, the Warriors played at North Fayette Valley with Central Elkader Thursday, then hosted Clayton Ridge Friday.

With the rain holding off the Turkey Valley boys’ golf team had a picture-perfect night for a competition Thursday as the Trojans lost by two strokes 204 to 202 to West Central. It was a boys’ only meet as the Blue Devils does not field a girls team.
Friday, the Trojans were back in action in the regular season finale at Cresco.

After a rough stretch in its schedule, the Decorah girls’ soccer team (3-11) picked up a critical win over the weekend at Waverly-Shell Rock tournament.

It was a total team effort given by the Decorah boys’ soccer team (8-3) as they played a trio of games at Waverly-Shell Rock Saturday with the Vikes going 2-1.
“We played well the whole day and are really happy with the guys’ effort. We tried to get a bunch of guys some time, and make this day about a total team effort. With another four games in the next eight days, we’ll learn from it what we can and keep plugging away at the regular season games,” said Coach Julie Simiele.

Stowe breaks nearly 100-year-old record

A record that has stood since 1929 finally was broken Monday as Decorah senior sprinter Haywood Stowe flew down the track in the 100-meter dash in 11.11 seconds.
“It has been a goal of Haywood’s, so it was great to see the 1929 record finally go down. We had many outstanding efforts from our athletes as we head into conference and state qualifying meets,” said Coach Joel Rollinger.

Local teams shine at South Winn invite

The South Winn track teams hosted the Warrior Invite Monday night.
The boys posted 165 points for the win, with Turkey Valley claiming second with 115 points. The Decorah junior varsity squad was also on the track finishing with 43 points in fifth place.
In the girls’ team race, it was Crestwood taking the top spot with 137 points. The Trojan girls also took the runner-up spot with 110 points, while Decorah was third with 87, followed by South Winn with 81.

Decorah girls’ tennis dominates conference tourney

The Decorah girl’s tennis team competed in the North Central Tennis Conference Tournament at the Luther College courts Monday, with Charles City, Clear Lake, Decorah, Osage and Waverly-Shell Rock competing. A day later, the Vikings were back on the court at Waverly-Shell Rock and returned home with a 6-3 win.

The Decorah boys’ soccer team (6-2) put another notch in the win column Monday as the Vikes shut out Dubuque Wahlert (3-6) at home 3-0.
Leading scoring for the Vikes in the first minute of play was senior Ryan Johanningmeier on an unassisted goal.

Warriors carve out victories over TV

The Turkey Valley golf teams were left with a skeleton squad due to a myriad of reasons when they played South Winn at the South Winn Golf and Country Club near Calmar in a rescheduled meet from earlier in the season Tuesday. This allowed the Warrior boys the opportunity to come through with a win 188 to 214, while the SW girls were victorious 238 to 260.

TV boys post win over Pirates

The Turkey Valley boys golf team got a much-needed win Monday night over Postville 203 to 216, while the Trojan girls dropped a competitive contest to the visiting Pirates, 231 to 268.
“The weather was decent with the temps a chilly 50 degrees and the sky overcast, but at least the wind was not howling like it has been for much of the season,” said Coach John Reicks.

Picking up a late-season tournament, the Decorah boys’ golf team competed at the Lake City Jewel Golf Club invite Monday with a fifth-place finish. Pine Island carded a 316 for the team title. The Vikings had a short turn-around as the hosted Caledonia Tuesday.

SW linksters seeing improvements

The South Winn golf teams split in a UIC dual against MFL Mar Mac despite seeing vast improvement at Tri-City Golf Club in Luana Monday. 
The Warrior boys had a 15-stroke improvement from the first time they played at Tri City Golf Course, but still fell the Bulldogs 196 to 162. MFL MarMac swept the medalist honors.

Decorah girls tumble to GC-GR

Another cold, wet, dreary day was only part of the misery for Decorah’s girls’ soccer team (2-8) as it traveled to Grundy Center-Gladbrook-Reinbeck (5-5) Monday night, falling 4-0.
GC-GR was able to control most of the possession and made the most of four of their many chances to score.

The Decorah girls’ golf team teed off at Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, falling 186 to 280. The Go-Hawks swept the medalist honors with the top spot going to Brenna Bodensteiner who fired a 43. Runner-up was McKenzie Weidler with a 46.

Relays golden for Trojan boys

Getting to compete Thursday, the Trojans traveled to Guttenberg to take part in the Clayton Ridge Invite and finished fourth with 113.50 points. The Eagles won their own meet with 151 points. Friday’s meet at Starmont was cancelled due to weather conditions.
Turkey Valley scored big points in the relay events, winning five of the seven.

SW gets back on the course

Mother Nature surely has dampened the practice and progress of many teams, including the South Winn boys’ and girls’ golf teams. Thursday, April 28, the Warrior girls hosted Crestwood, while the boys competed against West Central who doesn’t field a girls’ squad.

Decorah netters survive Viroqua and weather

Decorah boys’ tennis team welcomed Viroqua to town for another rainy match, which ultimately was taken inside at Luther College Friday night, ultimately winning 9-0.
“What a blessing to have that facility and get access, we are grateful for that opportunity. Viroqua brought a strong team and came to play, but Decorah matched their energy early and fought to a tough 9-0 win,” said Coach Matt Anderson.
