Decorah boys start season with victory

The Decorah boys’ tennis team traveled to Winona Senior Friday for their first dual meet of the year.  Playing under Minnesota rules where you only play singles or doubles, the expanded varsity roster of 10 showed their depth winning the meet 5-2.  

Warriors eyeing big season on the greens

It will be a mix of veterans and newcomers that tees off for the South Winn boys’ golf team this spring.
With three letter winners back from last year and a solid team of other athletes ready to crack the varsity line-up, the Warriors could finish near the top of the Upper Iowa Conference in 2022.
Leading the way are Michael Wenthold and Glenna Munuswamy.

Novices will rule the course for the South Winn girls’ golf team in 2022.
The Warriors return just three varsity starters to a squad with just one senior.
They will be coached by Glenna Munuswamy and Michael Wenthold, who are in their fourth year of co-coaching the South Winn golf teams.

Experienced nucleus to lead Trojans in 2022

With several members of the team having tasted what it’s like to compete at the state meet, the Turkey Valley boys’ track and field team is hungry to see if hard work pays off.
Encouraging the Trojans to do their best this season is head coach Mark Scott, who is leading the red and white for his 24th season.

Viking boys’ track team has big expectations for 2022

The warmer weather can’t come soon enough for the Decorah boys’ track and field team.
The Vikings will be looking to make it another banner year in 2022, after winning their fifth Northeast Iowa Conference title in a row.
Putting together the key pieces is head coach Joel Rollinger. Rollinger has led the Vikes for 23 years and has been with the program for 37. Assisting him will be Bill Post, Steve Nesteby and Jeff Wettach.

DHS girls’ soccer has high hopes this year

The Decorah girls’ soccer team is focused this season.
The Vikings are looking to transfer hard work and talent into a winning mark for 2022.
Leading the way is head coach Loren Hendrickson. He is in his fifth season at the helm of the program.

Four seniors will propel the Turkey Valley boys’ golf team this season.
The Trojans return four athletes with a stroke average under 60 from 2021. Helping the squad lower its score is head coach John Reicks. He has been with the program for 11 years.

The search is on for varsity spots on the Turkey Valley girls’ golf team. 
With two letter winners back from a year ago, the Trojans will be looking for four new members to step up and fill holes on the roster.

With six returning state athletes, 14 letter winners and numerous newcomers excited to make their mark in the Trojan uniform, Turkey Valley is eyeing their first conference title in school history.

Maturation of the underclassmen will be the key to the season for the South Winn boys’ track team in 2022.
The Warriors will need their younger athletes to find a spot on the varsity line-up in order for the Warriors to bring home the Upper Iowa Conference title for the second year in a row.

Free throws, foul trouble hinder Vikings at state tourney

There still has been no boys’ basketball team in Winneshiek County to win a game at the state tournament.
Seeded second entering the Class 3A tournament, the top-ranked Decorah Vikings were forced to play from behind for all of Tuesday’s quarterfinal versus Central-De Witt (19-6). In the end, foul trouble with several key players, combined with the inability to convert on free throws proved costly as Decorah lost, 67-59.

Five Vikes named all-NEIC

Five members of the Decorah boys’ basketball team were named to the Northeast Iowa Conference all-league team, released recently.
Joe Bockman and Carson Wemark were named to the first team, with Ben Bockman, Trey McCain and Jacob Pipho second team. It’s the second time for J. Bockman and Pipho receiving honors.

Juniors Bryar Duwe and Haley Gossman are both second-time honorees, while sophomore Yazmeen Whitsitt notched her first nod.
