Trojans bust out 54-14 first round victory

It didn’t faze the Turkey Valley football team (9-0) when Springville (4-5) broke loose for a 53-yard pass play to score on the second play of the game Friday. Instead, the Trojans showed the Orioles they could score too, and often, leading to the 54-14 first-round playoff win. 

Decorah gets chance at North Scott

Despite a strong effort, Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks (8-1) were too tough for the Decorah football team (6-3) Friday night, defeating the Vikings 26-7 in the regular season finale and battle for the district championship.
The Vikings finished second in the district and a bid to the postseason. Decorah travels to North Scott (9-0) in the first round Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m.

The area will be well represented at the state cross country meet, with two full squads and four individuals taking the course in Fort Dodge. They will be on a quest to earn a coveted spot on the deck by finishing in the top-10 overall and top three as a team.

Viking spikers knocking on door to state

The No. 12 Decorah volleyball team (28-6) was barely tested Thursday night in its first playoff action, defeating Charles City 3-0 in Decorah. The win pushes the Vikings into their fourth-ever regional final and their first since 2007.
The Vikings (28-6) move on to face Class 4A No. 1 Western Dubuque (30-3) Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Epworth at 7 p.m.

Warriors’ season ends with No. 9 Osage

The South Winn volleyball season came to an end on Wednesday evening facing Class 2A No. 9 and last year’s state championship team in Osage (26-9). The Green Devil offense came out strong and put a lot of pressure on the Warriors. The Warriors (11-20) fell in three straight sets — 10-25, 12-25 and 9-25.
In her final high school match, Janessa Zweibahmer led the team in kills with three on the evening while senior, Eryn Luzum produced 11 digs. Alison Heying dished out six assists.

Saints stop Trojans — again

For the second year in a row the Turkey Valley volleyball team (17-16) ended its season at the hands of Saint Ansgar (18-9) on the road, 3-1, Wednesday night in the regional quarterfinal. The Trojans battled through four tough sets — 15-25, 14-25, 25-19 and 13-25.

Schmidt’s serving lifts Trojans over Kee

Consistent, sharp serving combined with stellar hitting propelled the Turkey Valley volleyball team (17-15) to a 3-0 win over Kee (1-19) in the Class 1A Region 5 action Monday night. Game scores for the Trojans were 25-4, 25-13 and 25-6.
“The girls played great together and are moving well as a team. The team together had 18 total aces tonight. It was our seniors last volleyball game in the Turkey Valley gym for them and all of them got to see court time,” said co-coaches Tammy Vrzak and Jackie Novotny.

South Winn survives West Fork to advance

The South Winn volleyball team (11-19) pulled out a five-set playoff 3-2 victory over West Fork Monday in Calmar. 
In a match of momentum swings, the Warriors came out strong capturing a 25-15 first set victory. West Fork came right back dominating the Warriors in the second set with a 25-10 win. The teams then exchanged close set wins in sets three (25-22) and four (22-25), before the Warriors put together a strong run down the stretch in the fifth set to secure the win, 15-11.

Pipho wins Pigskin Picks

Jacob Pipho of Decorah is the winner for the week in the Decorah pigskin picks football contest.
Pipho was the only entry to miss one game this week. Ronald Praska of Cresco and Kyle Christen of Cedar Rapids missed two games were each just one from the tie-breaker.
Turkey Valley scored the most points this week with 65.

Regional swim sites announced

The Decorah girls swim and dive team will compete at the Dubuque Hempstead regional.
The regional diving competition, which also will be held at Dubuque Hempstead, is Thursday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. The champion from each regional site (a total of six), plus the next highest scoring 24 divers qualify for the state meet.

Vikings begin to eye postseason with one game left

Four games down, one to go in district action and the Decorah football team (6-2, 4-0) is eyeing the district title once again after blanking Waterloo East (1-7, 0-4) at home Friday night, 37-0.
“Our team played a solid game. Waterloo East was very aggressive with their blitzes and we were able to pick up many of them. We would have liked to rush the ball more, but we were able to pass it with effectiveness and our special teams and defense were excellent. Any time you can shut a team out, you must have had a good night defensively and on special teams,” said Coach Pat Trewin. 

Decorah netters finish runner-up at NEIC tourney

The Viking volleyball team opened the NEIC tournament Thursday at New Hampton with a pair of wins, defeating Charles City (12-22, 2-6 NEIC) in two sets by scores of 22-20 and 21-14 and Crestwood (7-23, 0-8 NEIC) 21-11 and 21-16.

TV tames Devils on gridiron

A huge rushing game propelled the Turkey Valley football team (8-0, 6-0) to a 65-8 victory over West Central (2-6, 1-5) Friday night in Maynard to finish undefeated in the regular season.
The Trojans picked up 333 yards rushing on the night.
“We played well again as our defense once again controlled the game, only allowing one long touchdown pass,” noted Coach Mark Scott.

Blazek wins gold for TV; Kruckman boys’ champ

For the second year in a row, the South Winn girls’ cross country topped the standings at the UIC cross country meet Thursday night at Silver Springs Golf Course in Ossian with 42 points. The Warrior boys edged MFL MarMac by one point to take third with 87 points, after SW’s Isaiah Kruckman broke the tape.
Neither Turkey Valley squad had enough harriers to compete as a team but crowned the individual girls’ champion, Jalyssa Blazek.
Harriers who finished in the top 15 in either of the boys and girls race earned all-conference honors.

SW spikers collect final UIC win

The South Winn volleyball team (10-19, 4-4 UIC) finished out the regular season with a UIC conference win over Postville (1-19, 1-5 UIC) on Thursday evening. Set scores for the UIC finale were 25-18, 25-21 and 25-18.
The Warriors had a great offensive night with 40 team kills and only eight errors. Katrina Hageman and Morgan Kleve paced the way with nine kills each. Ali Heying dished out 32 assists and Eryn Luzum had 18 digs on the night. Luzum was also 15-for-16 serving with a team-high four aces.

Trojans knock off Central 3-0 in UIC finale

Wrapping up the regular 2021 season on the road, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (16-15, 6-2 UIC) returned home from Elkader after taking a three-set victory from Central Elkader (10-28, 1-6) UIC). Set scores were 25-14, 25-23 and 25-15.
The team produced 30 kills, 103 attack attempts, 28 assists, 51 digs, four total blocks and served 58-for-79 with 11 aces.

Viking boys second, girls third at NEIC meet

The race to the postseason began Tuesday for the Decorah girls’ and boys’ cross country teams under perfect conditions at Oneota Golf and Country Club.
Competing hard, the varsity boys earned second with 59 points, while the girls finished third with 67 points. Waverly-Shell Rock swept the team titles in both varsity events with the boys scoring 51 points and the girls 54.

Warriors take care of WC

It was a great way to end the regular home season Tuesday night as the South Winn volleyball team (9-19, 3-4 UIC) defeated West Central (8-14, 4-3 UIC) at home 3-0. The Warriors won by scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 27-25.
A dominating opening set victory set the tone for the evening, although West Central pushed the Warriors in the next two sets with both coming down to the wire. The sophomore duo of Katrina Hageman and Avery Humpal led the way offensively with 10 and 8 kills respectively. Ali Heying dished out 25 assists and Eryn Luzum picked up 20 digs. Serving success was a big key to the victory with the team going 69-for-75 with 14 aces including eight by Luzum.
