SW boys double up on WC

After a slow start to Tuesday night’s game, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (2-1, 2-1 UIC) lit up the nets to defeat West Central (0-2, 0-2 UIC) on the road, 68-31.
In a tight battle for the lead, the Warriors led 12-11 after the first eight minutes. The second quarter was more Warrior style as the ball fell offensively for South Winn and defense was tight, outscoring the Blue Devils 17-4 to lead 29-15 at halftime. Despite West Central setting the pace in the third period, SW was back at it in the final eight minutes, holding the hosts to six points for the victory.

Trojan girls show balance

Defense and free throws were the story of the night Tuesday in Jackson Junction as the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (4-1, 4-0 UIC) defeated MFL MarMac (3-2, 1-2 UIC) in conference action, 44-38.
The Trojans jumped out front to a 15-8 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs worked to erase that advantage but continued to trail 24-18 at halftime. That first-half lead proved to be what Turkey Valley needed as both UIC squads knocked down 20 points in the second half.

South Winn’s Kipp reaches finals

The South Winn girls’ wrestling team made the trip to Waverly Tuesday night and competed with over 200 girls from 18 schools.
Senior Isabelle Kipp reached the finals at 190 pounds and brought home silver. Kipp claimed three falls en route to the final match. In round one, Kipp threw Jenna Small of Center Point-Urbana in 1:07 to advance to the quarterfinals against West Fork’s Fernanda Remirez. There the Warrior pinned her opponent in 1:56. It took the whole first period for Kipp to turn Leah Stewart of Charles City, picking up the fall at the 2:00 mark. In the finals, the senior fell to Independence’s Rachel Eddy in 46 seconds.

Cold offensive night for Trojan boys

It was a cold night shooting for the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (1-3, 1-2 UIC) as the Trojans fell to MFL MarMac (4-0, 2-0 UIC) Tuesday night at home, 70-27.
It was the Bulldog offense that put on a show to start the game, scoring 18 points in the first quarter to lead 18-8 after eight minutes. TV tried to climb back into the game in the second to no avail as the Trojans trailed 35-18 at halftime. In the second half, the Red and White scored just nine points, allowing the Bulldogs to take the win, 70-27.

Viking girls hold own at Dan Gable Donnybrook

The Decorah girls’ wrestling team was part of the inaugural girls’ event at the Dan Gable Donnybrook in Coralville and had numerous grapplers earn a spot on the podium. 
In addition, Viking Naomi Simon was named as the 2022 Outstanding Female Wrestler of the Year after she won the title at 170 pounds.

Fourth quarter lifts SW boys over Central

In its home opener Friday, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (1-1, 1-1 UIC) utilized a big final push to win 56-38 over Central Elkader (1-1, 0-1 UIC).
“We came out flat in our home opener. The first half was a struggle, we played decent defense at times, but really struggled to generate good looks on offense. We also missed several easy buckets in the first half,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “We played better in the second. Our defensive intensity picked up, we forced some turnovers and were able to hit some outside shots. Getting Keagen Streeter back on the floor was a big boost for us as well.”

Trojan girls survive NFV Friday

In a highly-contested road conference game, the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (3-1, 3-0 UIC) pulled off the 52-47 victory over North Fayette Valley (1-2, 1-1 UIC) Friday night.
The Trojan opened the game with a stellar 14-8 first quarter lead which held at halftime with TV out front 28-21. After the break, the Red and White continued to pull away, padding its advantage to 10 with a score of 43-33. The fire went dim in final quarter for TV as NFV threatened; however, the Trojans held on for the victory.

Decorah keglers sweep Indians

It was a big night for the Decorah bowling program as both the girls and boys picked up victories Friday night at King Pin Entertainment Center.
Facing Waukon, it was the second win of the season for both teams.
The girls produced a score of 2,528 to Waukon’s 2,039. Baker scores for the Vikes were 169, 147, 162, 155 and 145.
“I was very happy with our girls, and we are improving every day. In the match, they were all hitting the head pin and that’s a good thing. Our girls have great things ahead of them,” said Coach Keith Bruening.

Relay gives Vikes the edge

The title came down to the final race, the 400-yard freestyle relay Saturday in both varsity and junior varsity action for the Decorah boys’ swim team at the Cardinal Invite in Newton.
In the end, the varsity boys posted third and sixth-place finishes to earn enough points to edge Indianola with 302 points. Indianola finished the day with 293. The JV relay finished second and secured the team title with 124 points over Vinton-Shellsburg.

Tigerhawks knock off TV 42-35

A pair of slow offensive quarters hindered the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team’s ability to pull out the victory at North Fayette Valley (1-2, 1-1 UIC) Friday night on the road. The Trojans gave up the conference contest 42-35.
“NFV played well, and we were able to cut down on turnovers and played hard ball with shots that just wouldn’t fall. And our missed shots were key,” said Coach John Izer. “We will take this loss against a good team and move on.”

No. 9 Central hammers SW girls

The South Winn girls’ basketball team (1-3, 1-2 UIC) couldn’t keep up with the Class 1A No. 9 Central Elkader Warriors (4-0, 2-0 UIC) at home Friday, ultimately falling 61-20.
After trailing by four in the first eight minutes, 14-10, South Winn’s offense was shut down for Central as the visiting Warriors outscored SW 17-2 in the second period for a 31-12 halftime lead. The home Warriors were kept in check throughout the second half, scoring just eight points while Central rolled out to win 61-20.

Vikes come up just short…twice

The Decorah boys’ basketball team (1-2, 0-0 NEIC) will have to find a way to finish games in order to get back on a winning track after falling just short of the win column both Friday night and Saturday afternoon to Western Dubuque Epworth and Center Point-Urbana.

Late surge puts Vikings over CPU

It was a test of endurance for the Class 4A No. 7 Decorah girls’ basketball team (2-1) as the Vikes traveled to Class 3A No. 4 Center Point-Urbana (4-1) Saturday and came home with a 57-52 win.
The two teams kept pace with each other early on, deadlocked at 11-11 after the opening period. At the break, the Vikes pulled ahead slightly, 23-21. That lead evaporated in the third as the Stormin Pointers outscored Decorah to take a 37-34 lead. The Vikings needed a big fourth quarter and that is what they got as they drained 23 points and held off the home team.

Stille on podium for Decorah at Coralville

The Decorah boys’ wrestling team got in on the action at the Dan Gable Donnybrook tournament in Coralville over the weekend, with one grappler making the podium.
Senior Brady Stille wrestled his way into fourth place at 145 pounds to lead the Vikings.

SW fourth at Chris Davis Invite

It was a good outing for the South Winn boys’ wrestling team as it competed in the first tournament of the year at Wapsie Valley. Despite being open at four weight classes, the Warriors secured a fourth-place finish in team standings with 132 points, behind champion Nashua-Plainfield, Wapsie Valley and Anamosa. 
South Winn had good performances throughout the day with three grapplers reaching the finals and crowning two champions. The Warriors also had a trio of wrestlers recover from early losses to finish the day in third.

Local gridders named all-state by INA

Three local football players were recognized by the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) as all-state selections announced recently.
Honorees from all seven classes were chosen by sports writers from across the state.
Captains this year include Cael Ortmann of Remsen St. Mary’s, 8-man; Patrick Brown III of Grundy Center, Class A; Nolan Delong of Durant, Class 1A; Zach Lutmer of CLGLR, Class 2A; Aidan Hall of Harlan, Class 3A; Braylon Kammrad of Lewis Center, Class 4A; and Abu Sama of Southeast Polk, Class 5A.

Teams battle tested in Jackson Junction

Down to the wire.
Playing fast-paced basketball, the Turkey Valley boys (1-1, 1-0 UIC) outlasted the visiting South Winn Warriors (0-1, 0-1 UIC) Tuesday night in Jackson Junction, 52-51.
Scrambling up and down the court, both teams put up a solid first eight minutes with South Winn leading 13-11. The Trojans went to work in the second period, spearheaded by back-to-back treys by Oliver Schmitt. The treys propelled TV out to a 27-22 halftime lead. Both squads continued to play hard in the third with the Warriors cutting the Trojan lead to one, 36-35. The game came down to the final shot taken by South Winn senior Carson Wenthold that was just shy of the three-point line, which would have tied the game and sent it into overtime. Instead, it was a two-pointer, leaving a sour taste in the Warriors’ mouth at the loss.

Vikes pounds Blackhawks at home

It was an offensive explosion in the second half for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (1-0, 0-0 NEIC) Tuesday as the Vikes defeated Prairie du Chien (0-1) at home, 71-37.
Decorah struggled early and trailed 12-10 after the first eight minutes. However, things came together in the second, with the Vikings outscoring the visitors 19-9 for a halftime advantage of 29-21. The firepower continued in the third with Decorah going up 47-25 with eight minutes remaining.

Duwe, Whitsitt pace Decorah girls

Playing halves in place of quarters in Wisconsin rules, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (1-1, 0-0 NEIC) picked up a road win Tuesday over Prairie du Chien, 76-61.
“I was pleased with our performance against a very competitive team,” noted Coach Shannon Quandahl.
The Vikes put together a 40-34 first half lead and extended their advantage in the second half for the victory.

Multiple Viking, Warrior champs crowned
