TV’s Blazek breaks tape at Waukon; Decorah boys champs

Once again, the Decorah boys were crowned the champions of the Waukon cross country invite, sweeping both the varsity and junior varsity titles. The varsity girls were the runners-up, while the JV topped the five-team field.
Decorah to host VB tournament Saturday

The Decorah volleyball team is hosting a 9-team tournament Saturday, Sept. 24.
Action begins at 8:30 a.m. Teams competing at the invite are the Vikes, Kingsland (Minn.), Clayton Ridge, South Winn, Central Elkader, Jesup, Postville, Riceville and MFL MarMac.
Vikes knock off New Hampton

The Decorah volleyball team (13-2, 2-1 NEIC) continued its win streak Tuesday night defeating New Hampton (16-4, 2-1 NEIC) on the road, 3-0. Set scores were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-22.
Trojans thrash WC on the road

Opening the conference portion of the season, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (7-7, 1-0 UIC) bested (West Central (3-7, 0-1 UIC) Tuesday night on the road. Set scores were 25-20, 25-17 and 25-18.
“It was a good night for us as we took the first three games for the win. The first game we had an 8-point deficit at one time, it was awesome to watch the girls keep their composure and fight back for the win,” said co-coaches Tammy Vrzak and Jackie Novotny. “Clare Courtney did a great job digging tonight as Kourtney Schmidt was hot on the serving line to bring us victory.”
Schmitt wins week one

In a week that saw some tough choices in the contests, it was a Fort Atkinson resident that came out on top in the first week of the Pigskin Picks football contest.
Kevin Schmitt of Fort Atkinson picked all 15 games correctly to take the highest prize.
Warrior netters battle CR

An exciting conference opener for the South Winn volleyball team (4-11, 0-1 UIC), unfortunately, went the way of Clayton Ridge (7-12, 2-1 UIC) Tuesday night.
In the five-set battle, the Eagles jumped out with a dominating first set win 14-25, before the Warriors responded with two big set wins in a row, 25-18 and 25-15. Clayton Ridge picked up the final two sets, including a 16-14 in set five to secure the victory.
Trojans run over Riceville despite penalties

Although the score doesn’t indicate it, the Turkey Valley football team (4-0, 2-0) faced a battle Friday night. The Riceville Wildcats gave the Trojans a hard time, but so did the officials as TV compiled nearly 20 penalties for 150 yards.
“Our own mistakes hurt us the most,” said Coach Mark Scott. “Defensively we continued to dominate the line of scrimmage and our DBs did a great job of not giving up many big plays. Offensively we only punted once and that was early in the game. We did turn the ball over twice and had several loose balls that we recovered but cost us yardage.”
Second half propels Warriors over Starmont

After a week off of the competition court, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (6-7) battled at the Waukon tournament Saturday, finishing the day with a 3-1 record.
“The girls had a great weekend they really came together with fire under their belts. It was nice to see them bring to the court what we needed to tweak from last weekend. Josie (Weber) did a good job of utilizing all hitters and our back row played a stellar defensive game to give us great rallies. Brianna (Busta) stepped up her middle position and really showed what she can do. It’s fun to see the girls work together as a team and be able to complement each other during play,” said Coach Tammy Vrzak.

Vikes face healthy competition at Cedar Falls

The Decorah cross country teams laced up their sneakers Thursday to compete at the Rich Engel Classic held in Cedar Falls.
The varsity boys ranked 13th in Class 3A, finished ninth overall with 259 points. Class 4A No. 15 Iowa City Liberty finished first with 82, edging Class 4A No. 7 Cedar Falls by one point. In the girls’ team race, Decorah collected 343 to finished 13th. Claiming the team title was Class 4A No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead.

Facing Class 4A No. 8 Waverly-Shell Rock (14-4, 2-0 NEIC) at home Tuesday night, the Decorah volleyball team (7-1, 1-1 NEIC) faltered in three sets, 11-25, 19-25 and 16-25.
“For whatever reason we were not ready when the match started and our play in set one demonstrated that. Once we settled down a little we were able to compete with Waverly-Shell Rock,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “We passed fairly well but just couldn’t find the floor at times with our swings. As we’ve been saying all year, we know there are things that we need to continue to work on and a good team like Waverly-Shell Rock is going to identify those very quickly and capitalize on them. As we stated last night after the match, if we learn from the experience we will continue to grow and get better as a team. Independence on Thursday is going to be another tough match for us, and we need to be able to bounce back and be ready.”
Blazek sprints to silver at Starmont

The Turkey Valley cross country teams were back in action Tuesday night at Starmont racing against some top teams in northeast Iowa. Neither the girls’ nor boys’ teams fielded a full team for a score. In the Class 1A varsity team standings it was No. 6 Hudson taking the title over No. 10 Sumner-Fred by a tie-breaker after both girls’ teams finished with 56 points. Hudson also claimed the top spot in the varsity boys’ Class 1A team standings with 74 points.
Trojans ambush Rockford Warriors, 60-12

A huge rushing game propelled the Turkey Valley football team (3-0, 1-0) to a 60-12 victory over Rockford (1-2, 1-1) Friday night in Rockford.
The Trojans picked up 405 yards rushing on the night.
“We played very well with the Trojan offensive and defensive lines controlling the line of scrimmage all night. The offensive interior line of Collin Kleppe, Treyton Hulbert and Austin Kuehner let our backs get five yards untouched all game long. The running backs (Marcus Herold, Dylan Reicks and Carson Busta) then added tough yards after contact,” said Coach Mark Scott. “We did not throw much but when we did Noah executed the passes well going 4-for-5 with three touchdowns.”
Errors, penalties costly in Warriors’ loss to Eagles

Missed blocking assignments and a penalties turned out to be the undoing of the South Winn football team Friday night as the Warriors (1-2, 1-2) fell at home to Clayton Ridge (2-1, 1-0) in the opening game of district play, 7-0.
Vikings stumble at WD 42-21

A flurry of points in the final period swung the momentum to West Delaware as the Hawk football team (2-1) defeated Decorah (1-2, 0-0) in Manchester Friday night, 42-21.
“West Delaware is a deep and big team. We played very hard and the score got away from us at the end. It was a competitive ball game, and we made some very good plays, but we had a few too many mistakes to win against a good team. We believe we got better playing this game and learned more about what we can do,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “We will come out very determined to improve in our blocking and steadier in our passing game. We had players learn a new position in a week and they did an admirable job. We are proud of our physical effort. We can still communicate better, and make better decisions.”
