The Decorah softball team (6-2, 3-0 NEIC) wrapped up a busy week with a 1-2 record over the weekend by defeating Waukon and falling in a pair of games at the Marion tournament Saturday.

Following a slow start to the week, the Decorah baseball team (7-3, 5-1 NEIC) closed out last week with a trio of wins over North Fayette Valley and New Hampton.
Trojan baseball finishes week 1-1

It was a split end to the week for the Turkey Valley baseball team (3-6, 2-3 UIC) as the Trojans fell to Wapsie Valley and defeated Postville. Saturday’s non-conference contest with Oelwein was rained out.
Branum runner-up in Class 1A

The Class 1A boys’ state tennis individual tournament took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 24-25, at Byrnes Park in Waterloo before moving indoors due to weather at Black Hawk Tennis Center. Representing the Decorah in the singles competition were junior Daniel Skrade and sophomore Caden Branum, where 16 players from eight different districts come together to battle it out.
Branum, a district champion, secured the third seed and Skrade, a district runner-up, had to play a district Champion in the first round.
Nine returning letter winners to lead South Winn softball program in 2022

With nearly its entire team back on the diamond, the South Winn softball team is looking to do big things in the Upper Iowa Conference this season.
Leading the squad will be five seniors and seven juniors for second-year head coach Ken Buchheit. Joining him in the dugout as assistants are Calsey Lensing, Taylor Buchheit, Sierra Breitsprecher and Mary Frana.

Graduating just one senior from last year’s team, the Turkey Valley baseball team returns quality experience up and down the line-up this season.
Leading the team for his 20th season is Dan Stepan with a pair of new assistants — Alex Gisleson and Steve Busta.
A tough defeat; Marion ends Viking season

Fans of high school soccer knew Wednesday’s substate final between Decorah and Marion would be an all-out battle.
For 80 minutes the two battled back-and-forth on the Wolves home pitch.
Unfortunately, the Vikings couldn’t keep pace with the fast Marion squad, falling 3-0. All three goals came in the first half for the Wolves and were the first goals to be scored on Decorah since May 9, and three of only 12 goals scored against the Vikings all season.

Playing on their home pitch for the final time this season, the Decorah boys’ soccer team (13-3) kept their season alive with a 4-0 win over Center Point-Urbana (7-8-1) in the substate semifinal Monday night.
Decorah traveled to Marion (15-1) for the substate final Wednesday night for the chance to go to state. The winner will play at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines June 1, 3 and 4.

The Decorah baseball team has eight returning letter winners and a strong desire to find success again this season.
Leading the Vikings for his fourth season is head coach Adam Riley with a career record of 56-28.
Summer volleyball camp starts June 6

The Decorah volleyball program is hosting a summer volleyball camp for fifth through eighth grade athletes.
High school coaches as well as juniors and seniors will lead and coach at the high school unless posted otherwise. Parents are asked to drop off and pick up participants behind the school at the loading dock.
The camp is June 6, 13, 20, 27 and July 11 and 18. Incoming seventh and eighth graders will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m., while fifth and sixth graders will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Warriors sweep Clayton Ridge-Central at home

The South Winn baseball team (2-0, 2-0 UIC) took the first step toward reclaiming the Upper Iowa Conference title in 2022 with a thwarting of Clayton Ridge-Central (0-4, 0-2 UIC) in the opener Tuesday, 7-0 and 15-0.
The Warriors took advantage of their experienced line-up with runs scored in all but two innings in game one, including a four-run fourth frame to shutout the WarEagles. In game two, the Red and Gray needed just four innings to put the game away on the 15-run mercy rule.
Vikes rout SW to start season

Opening the season with a dual of two Winneshiek County teams, the Decorah softball team (1-0, 0-0 NEIC) defeated South Winn (0-1, 0-0 UIC) at home Tuesday, 6-2.
Lead-off batter for the Vikings, Bryar Duwe connected for a single in the bottom of the first. The junior eventually scored after stealing second, taking third on a pass ball and home on an SW error. Ellie Luzum later crossed home plate to give Decorah the 2-0 lead after the opening frame.
Trojan baseball falls to Kee in opener

Facing Kee High (3-1, 2-0 UIC), the defending Class 1A runner-up from a year ago, the Turkey Valley (0-2, 0-2 UIC) suffered a pair of losses in the opener Tuesday night 6-0 and 7-3 in New Albin.
“We pitched fairly well and played good defense. Our offense will be there we just need more live at-bats. Kee is a very good baseball club that is deserving of their No. 1 ranking,” said Coach Dan Stepan.
Decorah baseball start season 0-2 at Kee

Playing the Class 1A state runner-up, Kee, from a year ago to start the season, the Decorah baseball team found ways to put the ball in play but still came up empty in the win column. The Hawks (2-1) swept the Vikings (0-2) in the varsity twinbill 7-2 and 11-6.
“Hats off to a fine Kee High team that simply fielded the ball, pitched and had competitive at bats at the plate better than we did,” said Coach Adam Riley. “In the coming days ahead, we look forward to continued growth in our ability to consistently throw and catch the baseball as we start to have our whole team together on a consistent basis.”
Vike’s season ends in state quarterfinal

The Decorah girls’ tennis season came to a screeching halt in the state quarterfinal match against Waterloo Columbus on Monday afternoon when the Sailors shut out the Vikes, 5-0.
“After the excitement of the regional final meet of the year at the Luther College courts on Saturday against Aplington-Parkersburg, Columbus smothered any fire that we could start before it got going,” said Coach Larry Berland. “Columbus will be the number two seeded team this year in the final four tournament. They are for real.”
Blazek makes TV history; boys 4×400 in finals

For Turkey Valley senior Jalyssa Blazek, her senior season couldn’t have ended in any better.
In her third trip to state, the veteran was determined to bring home gold from the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. In fact, she brought home two and scored all of Turkey Valley’s points.
Overall, the Lady Trojans collected 20 points and finished 20th in the team standings. Winning the crown with 59 points was Nashua-Plainfield. In the boys’ team race, it was New London crowned the champion with 68 points. Turkey Valley garnered just two points and finished 46th.
Vikings place in nine events

The Decorah girls’ and boys’ track team contingent was cheering loud and proud for the Vikings as the Red and Blue tracksters scored in a combined nine events at the state track meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines last weekend.
The Viking girls finished 13th in Class 3A in team standings, securing 19 points. Solon won the title with 84 points.
Warrior tracksters shine in Des Moines

Last weekend was filled with solid performances by several South Winn athletes at the state track meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
At the end of the meet, the Lady Warriors garnered 10 points to finish 24th in the team standings. The Class 1A title was captured by Nashua-Plainfield who picked up 59 points. In the boys’ race, South Winn failed to score in the field won by New London with 68 points.
Girls’ tennis advance to state team tourney

Saturday’s match between the Decorah girls’ tennis team and Aplington-Parkersburg in team tournament action ranks as one of the top five matches that Larry Berland has watched in his 45 years of coaching.
With the Viking’s No. 1 player unable to play, everyone in the single’s lineup had to step up one level with Paige Lange stepping into the vacated No. 6 singles position.
Vikings advance to semis

It was another bench-clearing game for the Decorah boys’ soccer team as the Vikings (13-3) defeated West Delaware (1-15) at home Thursday, 10-0, to advance to the substate semifinal. It marks the Vikes 10th shutout of the year.
The Vikes battled Center Point-Urbana (7-7-1) Monday, May 23, with the winner facing the winner of Marion (14-1) and Maquoketa (3-11-1) Wednesday May 24, at Marion, with game time at 5 p.m.
