Warrior boys pull out OT win over Eagles

They needed an extra period, but the South Winn boys’ basketball team (14-5, 13-3 UIC) pulled off the 60-55 win over Clayton Ridge on the road Tuesday night. With the win, the Warriors finish second in the Upper Iowa Conference behind North Fayette Valley.

The dual season came to an end for the South Winn wrestling team Tuesday night.

The Warriors, ranked No. 15 in the final dual rankings compiled by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association and Iowa high School Athletic Association, faced No. 11 Denver in the regional dual semifinals hosted by West Hancock in Britt.

Hoffert becomes point-leader in TV history

The Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (16-5, 13-3 UIC) wrapped up the regular season this week with a pair of wins over Central Elkader and Clayton Ridge. In the process, senior Ali Hoffert surpassed Shelby Reicks’ career point record of 1266 points in 5-on-5 basketball at Turkey Valley. After Tuesday’s game, Hoffert’s total stands at 1269 with the postseason ahead.

Keglers prepping for postseason

After the conference team tournament scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30, was postponed due to inclement weather the tournament took place Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo. Teams in the conference include Columbus Catholic, Charles City, Denver, Forest City, North Fayette Valley, North Iowa, Oelwein, Sumner-Fred, Tripoli, Waukon and Waverly-Shell Rock.

Bulldogs claim UIC crown; SW second

After finishing second in the team standings last year, the MFL MarMac wrestling team has risen back to the top of the Upper Iowa Conference. The Bulldogs bested the field with 234 points, while South Winn was runner-up with 219 points. The 2020 champion, North Fayette Valley, finished with 153 in third place with Postville taking fourth with 119.5 points.

Decorah crowns one champ at NEIC

Teams from the Northeast Iowa Conference converged on Decorah Saturday to compete in the annual conference wrestling tournament. While the temperatures began to fall outside, the competition inside was fierce. With 189 points, the combined New Hampton/Turkey Valley squad finished third behind Class 3A No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock (287) and Class 2A No. 2 Crestwood who had 206 points. The Vikings ended the day with 177 in the team standings, finishing fourth.

It was senior recognition night for the Decorah bowling teams Friday as the Vikings hosted North Iowa at Oneota Lanes. Both the varsity girls and boys were victorious.
