With a sweep over Crestwood (0-5, 0-2 NEIC) Thursday, the Decorah baseball team (4-0, 2-0 NEIC) is off to a good start in the 2023 season.
“We were really pleased with both starting pitchers locating and throwing the ball effectively to allow us to play good team defense in both games. We did not swing the bats well in game one due to some effective pitching by Crestwood, but throughout the evening all hitters did a good job having multiple solid team at bats up and down the lineup.  We are really pleased with how this team is working together to support each other,” said Coach Adam Riley.
Crestwood struck first in game one with its lone run in the second inning before Decorah put up the tying run in the third, another in the fourth and two in the sixth for the 4-1 victory.
Brady Bohner went the distance on the mound, giving up just one run and striking out seven.
At the plate, Decorah had seven hits including doubles by Brayden Hartl and Kelley Gates. Providing a pair of singles was Mason Avila while Casey Brickley, Gates and Ben Wymer all had one apiece.
In the nightcap, the Vikes were on fire with one run in the first, three in the second, two in the fourth and closing out the game with a five-run fifth to win 11-0.
Throwing a hitless five-frames for Decorah was Fisher Tweten who recorded four strikeouts.
Kaden Alstad led the Vikes with three hits, including a home run and drove in four.
Decorah battled Mason City Friday; however, due to the early printing of the Driftless Journal for the Memorial Day holiday, the game recap will be published in the June 1 Public Opinion. The Vikings head to Waukon Tuesday, May 30, for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Decorah is on the road against Wednesday, May 31, as they battle North Fayette Valley in West Union at 4 p.m. The road games continue Friday, June 2, as the Vikes are at New Hampton at 5 p.m.
