Postseason starts this week

   The road to state for basketball, boys wrestling and bowling will start this week for area teams. Postseason pairings for Turkey Valley and South Winn girls’ and boys’ basketball teams have been released. Decorah girls basketball will be competing in Class 4A, to be released later this week, while the Viking boys basketball will wait to see who they face next week.

Girls basketball
   Turkey Valley is in Class 1A Region 6. The Trojans will take the court in the first round against West Central Thursday, Feb. 9, in Jackson Junction at 7 p.m. The quarterfinal will also take place in the Trojan gym Tuesday, Feb. 14, with the winner facing either Maquoketa Valley or Central City at 7 p.m. The regional semifinals are Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m., at Central Elkader. The regional final is Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m., at site to be determined.
   Other teams in Class 1A Region 6 are Central Elkader, Edgewood-Colesburg, Kee High, Dunkerton, Nashua-Plainfield, Clarksville, Rockford, Don Bosco, Tripoli and West Fork.
   South Winn is in Class 2A, competing in Region 5. The Warriors battle Postville in the first round Saturday, Feb. 11, in Calmar at 7 p.m. The winner goes on to face Aplington-Parkersburg Tuesday, Feb. 14, in Aplington, beginning at 7 p.m. The regional semifinal is Friday, Feb. 17, in Aplington, at 7 p.m., with the regional final scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m., with the site to be determined.
   Also competing in Class 2A Region 5 are Sumner-Fredericksburg, Denver, Clayton Ridge, Starmont, Cascade, MFL MarMac and Beckman Catholic.
   The state tournament runs Feb. 27 through March 4, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

District wrestling Saturday
   The road to state is shorter this year with the elimination of the sectional tournament as area wrestlers will have only district competition to qualify for the big dance Saturday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m.
   Decorah is in Class 2A and will host one of the district competitions. Other teams at the district are Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center, Charles City, Crestwood, New Hampton/Turkey Valley, North Fayette Valley, Oelwein and Waukon.
   South Winn is in Class 1A and will compete in Monona. Other teams besides host MFL MarMac and Warriors include Beckman Catholic, Clayton Ridge, Central Elkader, Edgewood-Colesburg, Maquoketa Valley, Postville, Starmont and Wapsie Valley.
   In both classes, the top two place-winners at each weight will advance to state.
   The individual state tournament runs Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 15-18, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Class 1A (SW) begins Wednesday at 9 a.m., while Decorah’s Class 2A matches begin at 1:30 p.m. The second session for Class 1A is Thursday at 9 a.m., followed by Class 2A at 1:30 p.m.

Boys basketball
   Both South Winn and Turkey Valley are in Class 1A District 5 and have received a first-round bye. Other teams in the district include Edgewood-Colesburg, West Central, North Linn, Maquoketa Valley, Clarksville and East Buchanan.
   The Warriors will face Tripoli Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m., in Calmar. The winner will likely face No. 2 North Linn on North Linn’s home court Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.
   Turkey Valley will take the floor first against East Buchanan Monday, Feb. 13, in Jackson Junction at 7 p.m. The winner will face either Maquoketa Valley or Clarksville Thursday, Feb. 16, at Maquoketa Valley at 7 p.m.
   The district final is set for Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., at a location yet to be determined with the substate to take place Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m.

Bowling next week
   Decorah will take steps to qualify for the individual and team state bowling meet for the 2022-23 season beginning with the girls Monday,,, Feb. 13, at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo at 10 a.m. The boys will compete at the same location a day later, Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m.
   Taking the lanes along with the Class 2A Vikes at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo will be Cedar Rapids Washington, Independence, Marion, Waterloo East, Waverly-Shell Rock, Western Dubuque and Xavier.
   Teams will bowl 15 baker games and the top two teams with total pins will advance to state. To qualify as an individual, keglers will bowl three games and the top eight scores from each site qualify for the state individual tournament for a total of 32 individual qualifiers.
   The state meet will be held Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 20-22, at Cadillac and Maple Lanes in Waterloo.
