Postseasons nearing for area teams

The road to state in the various winter sports are getting closer with many conference competitions taking place around northeast Iowa Saturday, Jan. 30.

 

Boys swimming

The state-qualifying meets for Decorah boys’ swim team is set for Saturday, Feb. 6. The Vikings will be in the pool at Dubuque Senior, with Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior, Linn-Mar, Vinton-Shellsburg and Waterloo.

Following venue and event format changes due to COVID-19, the 2021 IHSAA State Swimming Championships are now scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13, at Linn-Mar High School in Marion. The event was previously set for a two-day preliminary and final format at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The total number of qualifiers for the one-day state meet with timed finals will include 32 entries for individual events and 24 teams for relay events from six state-qualifying meet sites.

Due to capacity limitations, spectators will not be permitted at any IHSAA postseason swimming event. 

 

Wrestling 

Many area Class 2A teams will be on the mats Saturday, Feb. 6, at Decorah. Included in the Sectional 11 with the Vikings are Waukon, North Fayette Valley, Crestwood, New Hampton/Turkey Valley and Charles City. The meet is set to begin at 12 p.m. The top two grapplers in each weight class will advance to the district tournament at New Hampton Saturday, Feb. 13, at 12 p.m. Teams on the other side of the sectional bracket include AP-GC, Dike-New Hartford, Hampton-Dumont, Iowa Falls-Alden, Roland Story and Webster City.

South Winn will open up the postseason with a sectional at Lake Mills against Central Springs, Lake Mills, Newman Catholic, Northwood-Kensett, Riceville and Saint Ansgar. The top two matmen from the Sectional 7 meet will then compete Saturday, Feb. 13, at North Butler (Clarksville) against wrestlers from Sectional 8. Included in that sectional are AGWSR, Belmond-Klemme, Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler-Clarksville, Rockford, South Hampton, Tripoli and West Fork.

MFL MarMac will host the Class 1A Sectional 6 meet Saturday, Feb. 6, at 12 p.m. Also competing in that meet will by Postville, Central Elkader, Denver, Ed-Co, Starmont, Sumner-Fred and Wapsie Valley.

The top-two teams from each sectional will advance to team regional meets, Tuesday, Feb. 9, at a site to be determined at 6 p.m.

 

Bowling

The conference team tournament scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30, at Cadillac Lanes was postponed and has not been rescheduled yet.. Teams in the conference include Columbus Catholic, Charles City, Denver, Forest City, North Fayette Valley, North Iowa, Oelwein, Sumner-Fred, Tripoli, Waukon and Waverly-Shell Rock. The individual conference tournament is Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at Bowlaway Lanes in New Hampton.

Regional competition will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 12 p.m. Locations for teams have yet to be announced. State bowling will take place at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo. Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, the 2021 Iowa High School Co-Ed Bowling Championships will be spread out into class-specific sessions. Class 3A will compete Tuesday, Feb. 23, with Class 2A competing Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the morning, followed by Class 1A in the afternoon.
