Quartet represent Winn. Co. on podium

Four wrestlers put Winneshiek County on the map as they climbed the podium Saturday, Feb. 17, at the boys’ state wrestling championships. South Winn’s Collin Holm was the top finisher of the four in third place at 144 pounds in Class 1A. Decorah had three on the Class 2A podiums including Tommy Sexton at 190 pounds in fourth place, Mason Avila at 132 pounds in fifth and Gavin Knutson at 106 pounds in sixth.
As teams, Decorah finished in a tie for 13th with Ballard and New Hampton/Turkey Valley with 56 points in Class 2A, while South Winn tallied 38 points, finishing fifth with East Buchanan in 25th in Class 1A.
After falling in the semifinals, third-ranked Holm continued his march to a bronze medal with a fall in 5:47 over No. 4 Kolt Knaack of North Tama. In the third-place match, the Warrior senior scored a 7-2 decision over Lisbon’s Tiernan Boots, who was ranked fifth entering the championships.
In the consolation semifinal, Sexton earned a 10-1 major decision over Cael Burmester of Hampton-Dumont-CAL, setting up a rematch with Ballard’s Brody Sampson who Sexton had defeated in the quarterfinals. No. 1 Sampson got his revenge by a 7-3 decision in the match for third place.
Seventh-ranked Avila dropped his consolation semifinal Saturday morning 9-3 to No. 6 Aaron Boone of Washington but rebounded with a 5-4 win over Oskaloosa’s Kaiden Parker, who was ranked ninth, in the fifth-place match.
Opening the medal rounds at 106, 11th-ranked Knutson fell to No. 4 Urijah Courter of Nevada in 1:07 and couldn’t hold on in the second period against No. 6 Coy Mehlert of Union, getting turned in 3:12 to finish sixth.
