Regional swimming this week

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah girls swim and dive team will compete at the Dubuque Hempstead regional this week.
The regional diving competition, which also will be held at Dubuque Hempstead, is Thursday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. The champion from each regional site (a total of six), plus the next highest scoring 24 divers qualify for the state meet.
The swimming competition is Saturday, Nov. 6, at 12 p.m. Other teams at Dubuque Hempstead include Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior, Dubuque Wahlert, Iowa City High, Linn-Mar, Vinton-Shellsburg and Tipton.
Throughout the season, individuals have been able to qualify for a spot at state early by swimming under the qualifying standard time set by the state in each event, rather than waiting until the regional meet. There will be a field of 32 state qualifiers, consisting of all swimmers who have met the qualifying standard (the swimmers must still compete in the event at the regional meet). Regional champions from each event will be automatic qualifiers with the rest of the field filled by the next fastest regional times of swimmers who did not meet the state standard.
State will be held Friday-Saturday, Nov. 12-13, at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA. The State Diving Meet & Swimming preliminary meet takes place on Friday, Nov. 13, with the swimming finals taking place Saturday, Nov. 14.
