Turnovers and defense were the story of Friday night’s game between the South Winn girls’ basketball team (2-17, 2-14 UIC) and Kee (10-9, 9-7 UIC) as the Lady Warriors finished off the regular season with a 61-35 road loss.
“We need to do a better job taking care of the ball. We did a nice job executing the offense in the second half and we got good looks; however, the defense struggled. We gave Kee a lot of easy looks at the rim,” said Coach Justin Izer.
South Winn struggled in the first quarter, falling behind 18-6 after eight minutes. The second quarter was a labored effort by the Warriors as the Red and White saw the Hawk advantage stretch to 39-13. The visitors had a better second half, equaling Kee with 22 points, but the damage had already been done with the hole dug in the first half.
Janessa Zweibahmer had the hot hand, scoring 13 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals. Josie Tieskoetter was next with five points, while Morgan Kleve contributed four. With three points apiece were Mary Frana, Katrina Hageman and Janessa Zweibohmer.
South Winn will turn its focus to the postseason as the Warriors will travel to Dyersville, Saturday, Feb. 13, to take on Beckman Catholic in round one of the Class 2A Region 1 competition. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m.
