Rough start to week for SW baseball

By Becky Walz,

With games every day this week, the South Winn baseball team (5-4, 3-2 UIC) dropped its first three contests in a UIC doubleheader and non-conference match-up.

In New Albin
In a big early season UIC matchup between two of the top teams, Kee High (7-5, 3-0 UIC) prevailed with the conference sweep over the Warriors, 7-0 and 5-3, Monday night in New Albin.
Kee High pitcher Dalton Dibert kept the Warrior offense in check in game one. Junior, lefty, Jordan Buchheit, was effective for four innings holding the Kee Hawks to two runs before getting into trouble in the fifth inning where Kee High was able to open the game up with three additional runs.
“We knew going in, we could find ourselves in a pitchers dual, and unfortunately we made some miscues defensively that didn’t keep us in the game late,” said Coach Alex Smith.
In game two, the Warriors were able to notch their first run of the day on a Logan Hageman double that hit the top of the fence plating one run. Kee High matched it in the bottom of the inning and it was a back-and-forth affair from there. The three-run fifth inning for Kee proved to be the difference. Briar Tigges hit a solo home run in the sixth to cut into the lead, but the Warrior offense couldn’t come up with anything in the seventh. Ethan Luzum tossed four solid innings in the start and Keagen Luzum picked up the loss throwing the final two innings.
“Kee High has a very nice team and we knew we would need to play well to win a game or two at their place. Their pitchers were in the strike zone and their defense was clean throughout the night. We’ve played against many of these guys for a long time and they are always going to be prepared and energized when they play us. Our guys will look forward to a rematch in a couple weeks when they travel to Calmar,” said Coach Smith.

Non-conference battle
South Winn dropped their fourth game in a row to Class 1A No. 1 Mason City Newman (12-1). The Knights jumped out to a four-run first inning before Nick Holien settled in a tossed four innings giving the Warriors a chance to stay in the game. Cael Kuboushek had one of the three hits for the Warriors on a double. The Warriors best opportunity to score came in the fourth inning, but they failed to plate a run with runners in scoring position.
“We knew going in we were going to face a challenge with a high-level team. Nick Holien really did a nice job settling in and giving us four innings on the mound. We know we are going to need quality innings from a number of guys over the next couple of weeks and I’m confident Nick will offer that moving forward,” said Coach Smith.
