The South Winn baseball team (23-10) was a bit sluggish offensively to start the week with a couple of talented ball clubs in Saint Ansgar and Class 2A No. 10 Beckman Catholic.
Versus Saints
South Winn dropped a non-conference game to Saint Ansgar (21-7) to open their week on Monday, 9-2.
Saint Ansgar scored in all but one inning and broke the game open with two runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Warriors had just five hits in the contest with nobody tallying more than one hit. Cael Kuboushek and Carson Wenthold each tagged the ball for doubles, while Keagen Streeter, Briar Tigges and Tony Greve all had singles.
Three players climbed the hill for SW with Streeter shouldering the loss. Also throwing for the Warriors were Kuboushek and Tigges.
“We struggled in many facets this evening, and you can do that against a high quality opponent. Saint Ansgar put the pressure on us, and we didn’t make big pitches or big plays when we needed to,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Beckman visits Calmar
The Warriors suffered their second loss of the week to Class 2A No. 10 Beckman Catholic (19-14) on Wednesday evening, 6-1.
In a tight ball game, South Winn even the score on a Carson Wenthold single in the fourth inning. Beckman took advantage of a couple of miscues scoring two runs in the sixth inning and adding three insurance runs in the seventh.
Ethan Luzum tossed five quality innings surrendering just one run on three hits in five innings of work.
At the plate, the Warriors tallied nine hits with Logan Hageman going 2-for-3 and Kuboushek tagging two balls including one for a double.
“This was a highly competitive game for our guys to play in. We saw Beckman’s top pitcher and were able to get nine hits, but unfortunately couldn’t get it done with runners in scoring position. I felt good about where we were at in most facets of the game and know this was a great game to get us playoff ready,” said Coach Smith.
