Season comes to an end for Decorah boys

By Becky Walz,

Playing No. 3 Dubuque Wahlert in the substate action, the Decorah boys’ tennis team saw its season end Saturday, 5-1.
“Wahlert has a solid roster top to bottom. They have the added advantage of playing in the Mississippi Valley Conference made up of large city schools, so their competition is much better overall throughout the season than Decorah faces. That said the Decorah guys made them sweat,” said Coach Reg Laursen.
“Caden Branum continued his torrid singles play with a victory at the No. 2 singles spot. At No. 3 Daniel Skrade, took his opponent to a third set before finally succumbing in a close final set. Noah Tapscott had his opponent on the ropes in the first set at No. 6 before the opponent changed to tactics not as favorable to Noah,” said the Viking Coach. “Gabe Anderson, Brendan Hunter and Edwin Holyoake worked their butts off and the whole team played their hearts out. Our whole coaching staff agreed that our guys pretty much maxed out playing to their potential. We cannot ask for more than that and are so proud of them. We would have loved to scratch out one more singles win so that we could have played some doubles, but sometimes one has to acknowledge that the opponent is just better.”
While as a whole the team has concluded the season, the Vikings have a double team still set to compete as a doubles team in the individual state tournament May 28-29 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.

Singles: No. 1 Gabe Anderson (Dec) was defeated by Charlie Fair (Wahlert) 2-6, 2-6; No. 2 Caden Branum (Dec) defeated Jak Freiburger (Wahlert) 6-4, 6-4; No. 3 Daniel Skrade (Dec) was defeated by Ricky Walker (Wahlert) 3-6, 6-4, 4-6; No. 4 Brendan Hunter (Dec) was defeated by Roan Martineau (Wahlert) 0-6, 0-6; No. 5 Edwin Holyoake (Dec) was defeated by Sam Timp (Wahlert) 3-6, 4-6; No. 6 Noah Tapscott (Dec) was defeated by Nolan Martineau (Wahlert) 5-7, 3-6
