By Becky Walz,
A second-half defensive effort pushed the South Winn football team (2-2, 2-2) over the top of Starmont (1-3, 1-2) Friday for the homecoming victory, 34-26.
All systems go
“We didn’t help ourselves early on. Starmont got up 12-0 due to a breakdown in coverage and a costly fumble. Logan Hageman and Keagen Streeter played complete football games to keep us in it,” said Coach Jason Ohrt.
Facing the 12-0 deficit, the Warriors got on the board with a 64-yard run by Logan Hageman. The senior running back/linebacker added two more scores in the second period on an 18-yard pass from Brady Ohrt and a 39-yard fumble return. Before halftime, the Stars retook the lead 26-20.
Returning to the gridiron in the second half, the Warrior defense stood tall, outscoring the Stars 14-0. Ohrt completed his second
touchdown pass of the game, this time to Keagen Streeter in the third quarter. Carson Wenthold dodged through traffic in the fourth period to seal the contest with a 98-yard punt return.
“I’m proud of the growth I observed from this group. We had to battle some adversity in the first half, but played a very clean second half, outscoring Starmont 14-0,” noted Coach Ohrt.
Running down the numbers
Overall, SW had 249 yards of offense, while Starmont had 266.
