Second quarter lifts SW over TV

By Becky Walz,

Several threes in the second quarter lifted the South Winn boys’ basketball team (6-2, 5-1 UIC) to the lead over Turkey Valley (4-3, 3-3 UIC) and the Warriors never looked back, claiming the UIC win Tuesday, 51-38, in Calmar.

On the run
The Warriors struck first, with Trey Kriener swishing home a bucket, followed by a Keagen Streeter free throw. Trojan Carson Busta hit the first of his three treys to tie up. After trading buckets, Garrett Kurtenbach hit a basket from beyond the arc as TV went up 12-7 at the first quarter break.
South Winn erased the Trojan lead early with a basket by Streeter and trey by Dawson Wenthold, who hit another shot from three-point land to give the Warriors a 17-15 lead in the second. A Carson Wenthold trey pulled SW out front 21-16, as the Warriors rolled out to a 30-20 halftime advantage.
Scoring between the two squads was more balanced in the second half with the Warriors outscoring the Trojans 21-18 to claim the victory.

Happy coach
“I love the atmosphere for rivalry games, no matter what the record going in this is always a hard played game.  Once again we started slow, but we picked it up in the second quarter.  We had very balanced scoring tonight and shot the ball well from beyond the arc,” said South Winn coach Derek Taylor. “Defensively we played really well all game and made them earn just about every shot they made.  The only knock on this game was free throw shooting, that was bad, and that’s definitely something we need to clean up after Christmas break.”
Six Warriors scored, led by Keagen Streeter’s 11 points. Trey Kriener was also in double figures with 10 points. Carson Wenthold contributed nine points.

More to learn
“The game plan was to contain their two big guys and I thought we did good at that,” said TV coach John Izer. “In the second quarter their guards hit threes and when that happens they are tough. We struggled to get any rhythm on offense. Having a couple weeks on break now gives us the chance to clean up some things and throw some new stuff in.”
The Trojans were led by Garrett Kurtenbach with 13 points, along eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Carson Busta poured in nine points.

After the break
Both squads have a reprieve from competition until Tuesday, Jan. 4. South Winn will travel to Kee High in Lansing, while Turkey Valley faces the Pirates of Postville.
