Short field and rain hands TV win in season opener

By Becky Walz,

It was a deluge of rain, thunder and lightning after the first quarter of the Turkey Valley football home (1-0) opener Friday, that ultimately gave the Trojans the 14-0 victory over Ed-Co (0-1).
Lightning in the area during the quarter break sent the teams to the locker rooms and fans to their cars for several hours before the visiting Vikings chose not to make the return trip to Jackson Junction to finish the game.
After a slow start on the Trojans’ first possession, Marcus Herold hit a 50-yard punt that pinned Ed-Co back inside their own 5-yard line. Following a good defensive stand Noah Hanson returned the punt 15 yards to give TV a short field. From that point on offensively and defensively we started to control the game.
The Trojans scored their first points of the season on a 15-yard pass from Hanson to Garrett Kurtenbach and their second on a 33-yard scamper from Hanson.
Turkey Valley had 78 yards of offense with Hanson complete two passes for 20 yards. His targets were G. Kurtenbach for a 15-yard completion and Herold for another five. On the ground Hanson had three carries for 28 total yards, while Herold had 24 yards in his five carries.
Defensively it was Herold and G. Kurtenbach with 1.5 total tackles, with Dylan Reicks, Oliver Schmitt, Chase Hayek and Robert Kruse all having one.

On the horizon
Friday, Sept. 3, the Trojans will face Don Bosco, on the road at 7 p.m. The Dons are coming off a rare regular season loss to Easton Valley, 60-14.
