Opening day proved to be a good one for the South Winn baseball team (2-0, 2-0 UIC) which picked up a conference doubleheader sweep over Clayton Ridge-Central (1-4, 0-2 UIC). The Warriors minimized the number of innings played by picking up the run rule in both games in five innings. Pitching was the key with four Warriors pitching combining for 10 innings of scoreless ball.
Kicking off the season in style, the Warriors put their first run on the board in the second inning with four more in the third. SW put the game to bed in the fourth with a big eight-run inning, 10-0.
Braiden Todd picked up a win in his first career varsity start going five innings and allowing just two hits while striking out 10 in game one.
South Winn tallied eight hits in the contest, including doubles by Jamie Kuennen, Parker Timp and Todd with Carson Streeter tallying three RBI.
In the nightcap, the Warriors put together a big second frame, pushing nine runs across home plate. One in each the third and fourth inning ended the game early, 11-0.
Cody Meyer picked up game two throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first career varsity win.
In game two, South Winn had nine hits with Carson Wenthold coming away with two doubles. Timp and Kole Hageman provided two singles and two RBI apiece.
“This was a great start to the season and very pleased with our ability to throw a lot of strikes from our pitching staff. We will have a number of guys throw with minimal varsity experience so getting off to a good start will be key in building their confidence,” said Coach Alex Smith.
Wednesday, the Warriors were at St. Ansgar and will play at Wapsie Valley in a junior varsity/varsity twinbill tonight (Thursday, May 25) at 5 p.m.
