Competition was rigid at the 2022 girls state wrestling championships over the weekend with over 1,000 girls vying for titles at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville for titles.

Competition was rigid at the 2022 girls state wrestling championships over the weekend with over 1,000 girls vying for titles at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville for titles.
Wrestlers from Decorah and South Winn made the trek to compete with Decorah sophomore Naomi Simon returning to northeast Iowa with the 170-pound title, while the Vikings’ team finished fifth overall with 124 points. Wrapping up the team title was Waverly-Shell Rock with 219 points.
After winning the championship at 145 pounds a year ago, Simon returned to the state mats ranked as the No. 1 wrestler at 170 pounds and threw her way to the top of the podium. Undefeated entering the competition, Simon had a first-round bye and proceeded to pin Brooklyn Brown of Southeast Polk in 26 seconds in round two. It took the Viking 58 seconds to put Maya Fritz of Dallas Center-Grimes on her back to advance to the quarterfinal round. It was there that Simon threw Osage’s Leah Grimm in 2:54. In the semifinal, the Decorah wrestler pinned Katie Schlosser in 3:44. Standing between Simon and the title was a match with Southeast Polk’s Bella Procelli in the finals, where the Viking earned the gold in 3:57 with a fall.
