Sixth inning trips up Warriors

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn softball team (0-1) had a close contest with Saint Ansgar in the works, before the Saints rattled off seven runs to close out Wednesday’s contest, 14-4.
“We got off to a great start and the girls were excited and ready to play,” said Coach Ken Buchheit. “Game was close with great energy until it got away in the last inning. We had good at-bats and ran the bases pretty well.”
Mary Frana singled to start the season opening game before Eryn Luzum connected with the ball for an infield hit. It was Ruthie Frana who put the exclamation point in the first inning with a three-run bomb. Morgan Kleve followed with a single and scored on a double by Avery Humpal to give SW a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first.
Saint Ansgar got three runs back in the bottom of the opening frame and tied it up in the third, 4-4. Bre Dvorak threw out the go-ahead run at the plate to end the third and stop the Saints’ scoring threat. During the remainder of the game, the Warriors had a lot of base runners but couldn’t get the two out hits to get them in.
Down 7-4 in the sixth frame, SW started its at-bat with lead-off batter M. Frana who singled and stole a base; however, that’s as far as the Warriors would get. The Warriors then gave up seven runs to lose 14-4.
