Slow quarters hinder Decorah girls

A slump in scoring in the second and fourth quarters proved costly for the Decorah girls’ basketball team (8-5) against Class 2A No. 2 Denver (14-2) Tuesday at home. When the final buzzer rang, the Vikes came up shy of the win 52-45.

A slump in scoring in the second and fourth quarters proved costly for the Decorah girls’ basketball team (8-5) against Class 2A No. 2 Denver (14-2) Tuesday at home. When the final buzzer rang, the Vikes came up shy of the win 52-45.
Decorah was in control after the first period 19-13 before suffering a scoring drought in the latter half of the second period, which allowed the visiting Cyclones to pull within one, 24-23. Denver’s offense picked up the pace in the second half to take the lead 44-41 with a period remaining.
Five Vikes knocked down points, led by Bryar Duwe’s 16. Yazmeen Whitsitt converted on 12, while Haley Gossman contributed 11. On the board with four points was Brynn Storhoff and Kylie O’Hara added two.
The Vikings will be at New Hampton Friday, Jan. 28, at 6:45 p.m., then hosts Charles City in a make-up game Saturday, Jan. 29, at 2:30 p.m.
