The numbers aren’t where sixth-year coach Sarah Bakula would like to see them, but she is excited about the quality of athletes set to race this season on the Turkey Valley cross country teams.
“We are a small squad, so everyone will have a role to play in the success of the team,” said the coach. “I hope to keep the fun alive and help everyone enjoy the season in its entirety.”
A quick look back
Last season, the Trojans found success on various courses, including state as senior Jalyssa Blazek finished second in Class 1A after being crowned the conference and district champion. Cambree Kruse, another senior, also made strides, finishing sixth at the Upper Iowa Conference meet and qualifying for state. The pair, along with Hailey Elsbernd and Dale Schwamman graduated after the season, leaving some holes in the team.
Lone returnee, three newbies
Bode Balk is the only harrier set to return to the Trojan squads, along with three newcomers including junior Russell Nieman and freshmen Haylee Hanson and Morgan Wenthold.
Coach Bakula sees plenty of strengths among the foursome including the unity and determination they share, as well as the support for each other.
“I look for us to have a good season, even without a full team, with this bunch of kids. We have some huge potential with the newcomers, so I am excited to watch their improvement unfold as the season progresses. The end result of the season is to accomplish our individual goals and do the best we can,” said Coach Bakula.
Expectations
With a championship won last season, the TV coach expects to see South Winn back at the top of the Upper Iowa Conference in the girls’ race, while she believes Clayton Ridge will be fun to watch on the boys’ side.
While they may not have a full team, the Trojans could have some outstanding races on the way according to Coach Bakula.
“I see the freshmen girls have some high finishes as well as Russell after his breakout track season in the 800-meter and 1600-meter races last season,” she noted. “I look to see Bode improve on his finish from last year as well.”
