The South Winn softball team (2-3, 2-0 UIC) produced a pair of conference wins last week, defeating Central Elkader, before finishing the week at home versus Waukon.
UIC sweep
Settling into the new season, the Warriors took care of business Wednesday with two wins over Central Elkader at home, 5-0 and 7-6.
All South Winn’s runs came in the fourth inning after Liz Engelhardt was walked to start the frame. Crossing home plate along with Engelhardt were Ali Heying, Morgan Kriener, Mary Frana and Ruthie Frana.
Twirling the ball for the seven innings in game one was Eryn Luzum, who struck out 14 batters. SW garnered five hits in the contest including a two-RBI double by Mary Frana.
In the nightcap, Central took control with four runs in the first frame; however, it was South Winn who had an even bigger inning, plating six runs in the third. An additional tally in the fourth frame pulled the home Warriors ahead before Central tacked on two runs in the sixth before the SW defense thwarted the Central offense to hold on for the win.
Morgan Kleve and Luzum combined their pitching efforts to strike out 10 total Central batters. Alison Heying poked out a two-RBI double in the third frame. Four other Warriors had hits in the contest, while senior Emma Houdek managed to steal two bases.
