Opening the week with a couple of road trips, the South Winn softball team (9-11, 7-3 UIC) split at Clayton Ridge and fell to Riceville.
UIC road trip
Monday night started hot for the Warriors at Clayton Ridge (6-13, 5-5 UIC) with an 11-4 victory, but ended with an extra-inning loss 8-7 to the Eagles.
In game one, South Winn put up its first four runs in the first frame and added one in the fifth, but the nail in the coffin was the six-run seventh inning that led to the Warrior victory.
The Warriors had nine hits in the contest. Alison Heying knocked out a triple, while Morgan Kleve had a two-hit night with a double and four RBI. Abby Wagner and Janessa Zweibahmer also had two hits apiece for South Winn. Picking up the win in her seven innings of work was senior Eryn Luzum with 11 strikeouts.
The nightcap went to the home team after nine innings on the diamond when South Winn plated the tying runs in the top of the seventh.
This time Luzum was the losing pitcher despite ringing up seven batters. Wagner also twirled the ball for four frames, picking up three strikeouts.
At the plate, Wagner and Ella Willey each connected for doubles. Willey also had a single with two RBI for the Warriors. Striking the ball for multiple singles were Kleve and Isabella Opperman as well.

At Riceville
Back on the road Tuesday, the Warriors traveled to Riceville (14-8), dropping the non-conference game 11-1 in five innings.
South Winn’s lone run of the game came in the top of the opening stanza by Abby Wagner off a Kleve RBI single. From there the Wildcats stole the show, putting up three runs in the first, two in the third and ending the game with six more in the fifth.
Luzum struck out seven opposing batters in her time in the pitcher’s circle, suffering the loss.
The Warriors collected five hits in the contest. Alison Heying pounded out a double, while Zweibahmer, Kleve, Willey and Morgan Kriener all had a hit.
