The South Winn girls’ basketball team (5-8, 3-7 UIC) made it two wins in a row as the Warriors conquered the Postville Pirates (2-9, 1-8 UIC) Tuesday at home 30-25.
The Warriors gave up seven points early in the first period, leading 9-7. The SW defense shut the Pirates down in the second quarter for a 15-7 advantage at halftime. Despite Postville’s effort to erase its deficit, the Warriors buckled down defensively to claim its fifth victory of the season.
“I am proud of how all of our girls are stepping up when we need them to. On nights like these, when we have a short bench, we need someone to step in and play quality minutes. I thought Hailey Riehle and Aubrey Willey did a great job off the bench tonight. Our defense was great again,” said Coach Justin Izer.
Josie Tieskoetter came away with 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists to lead the Warriors. Janessa Zweibahmer knocked down nine points to go with 13 boards, while Morgan Kleve added eight points and four rebounds.
It will be a road game for the SW girls Friday, Jan. 14, as the Warriors play at West Central. Next week, South Winn will host MFL MarMac Tuesday, Jan. 18.
