Taking on a pair of non-conference opponents to end last week, the South Winn softball team (9-9, 7-1 UIC) fell to .500 with losses to Sumner-Fred and Oelwein.
Beating the rain
With a threat of storms, Thursday’s non-conference contest with Sumner-Fred (12-11) was moved up to 4 p.m., and played with some lights overhead as the dark clouds moved in. Both squads played with passion, however, it was the Cougars securing the 3-0 victory in Calmar.
Scoreless into the sixth inning, S-F plated two runs and tacked on one in the seventh while keeping the Warriors off the basepaths except for one hit by freshman Avery Humpal.
“I was very happy with our effort, though disappointed we didn’t hit better, but that’s a credit to their pitcher,” said Coach Ken Buchheit. “Our intensity was great and the desire to win was there. I was a little concerned with how our corners would play with Ali (Heying) and Morgan (Kleve) gone, but Janessa (Zweibahmer) and Hailey (Riehle) did a great job.”
