The South Winn volleyball team (11-19) pulled out a five-set playoff 3-2 victory over West Fork Monday in Calmar.
In a match of momentum swings, the Warriors came out strong capturing a 25-15 first set victory. West Fork came right back dominating the Warriors in the second set with a 25-10 win. The teams then exchanged close set wins in sets three (25-22) and four (22-25), before the Warriors put together a strong run down the stretch in the fifth set to secure the win, 15-11.
Outside hitter Katrina Hageman led the team with 11 kills while middle hitters Janessa Zweibahmer and Morgan Kleve both had strong nights at the net with nine and eight kills, respectively. Ali Heying distributed the ball well dishing out 27 assists with Eryn Luzum leading the defense with 14 digs. Emily Michels provided a spark off the bench serving 14-for-14 with two aces.
“I’m really proud of how we battled through some adversity to pull out a close playoff win at home. This was an exciting win, not just for the team, but for the program to be able to host a postseason game and play in front of an excited crowd. We look forward to the challenge of taking on Osage in round two, and know we will have our hands full with a high-level program but will look forward to the opportunity to continue playing,” said Coach Alex Smith.
