The South Winn baseball team moved to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play with the 5-1 victory over MFL MarMac (3-6, 1-3 UIC) Thursday evening.
Three key insurance runs later in the game gave some breathing room. MFL MarMac made it interesting in the seventh inning loading the bases and having the tying run at the plate. A great defensive pickoff by junior catcher, Keagen Streeter, ended the game.
At the plate the Warriors had five hits, including a homer by Logan Hageman. Adding to the offensive threat were two singles by Nick Holien and one each from Streeter and Tony Greve.
The win went to southpaw Jordan Buchheit in his five innings on the hill as the senior struck out nine batters. Greve picked up the save in relief as he threw two innings.
“We didn’t get much going offensively tonight but did just enough to put pressure on MFL to plate a few runs. Logan (Hageman) had the big swing of the night with the home run, and Keagen Streeter made an outstanding defensive play picking behind a runner at second base to finish it out. We got another strong outing out of our starting pitcher, with Jordan Buchheit coming up with some key strikeouts in critical situations to hold MFL to just one run,” said Coach Alex Smith.
The Warriors will take the field against top-ranked Newman Catholic Tuesday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m., and host Kee High Thursday, June 9, at 7 p.m.
