Streeter rushes over 300 yards for South Winn

By Becky Walz,

A defensive stop in the red zone during the final 30 seconds ensured the Warriors’ 44-36 victory over North Tama Friday night in Calmar. The win moves the South Winn football team to 3-2 in the district and guarantees a playoff bid in Class A with one game left in the regular season.
“We got off to a fast start, and our running game led by Carson Streeter kept us in the lead the entire game. Our kids blocked very well giving us over 400 yards rushing. We had four freshmen playing significant time on both sides of the ball and I couldn’t be prouder of how they rose to the challenge,” said coach Jason Ohrt. “This was a nice win for our seniors as this was most likely their last home game. There are a lot of good football teams in Class A and to earn a shot in the post season is always a challenge every year. We’re hoping to continue this momentum and finish the regular season on a high note as we prepare for the playoffs.”

Scoring bonanza
Although the game came down to the wire, there were highlights throughout Friday’s game, especially from the junior duo of Carson Streeter and Kyle Kuboushek who combined for all six of the Warriors’ touchdowns and 21.5 total tackles.
Coach Ohrt provided North Tama with a new look as Streeter took the snaps Friday night in place of Braiden Todd who was moved to the backfield. Streeter and Kuboushek moved the ball efficiently on the opening possession with the latter capping off the drive in the end zone as he ploughed ahead three yards with 5:42 left on the clock in the first. A trio of North Tama penalties gave the Warriors the pigskin back just over two minutes later, and Streeter wove in and out of traffic 67 yards to the house, putting South Winn on top 15-0.
Playing an up-tempo offense, the Redhawks made their way into the endzone less than two minutes into the second. However, Streeter once again turned on the jets for another long run. This time it was a 68-yard carry for the junior for his second score of the night and a 22-8 lead for the Warriors. North Tama’s Kolt Knaack continued to give the South Winn defense trouble as he picked up yard after yard on carries, eventually plummeting over the goal line with 3:48 left in the half to narrow the margin to 22-14. Both teams would tack on scores in the final 3:44 with Kuboushek scoring again for the Warriors with 2:27 remaining to make it 29-22 in favor of South Winn at halftime.
South Winn’s defense forced the Redhawks to turn the ball over on downs at the 9:10 mark of the third and the offense opened a hole for Kuboushek to score for the third time with 7:25 remaining allowing the Warriors’ a comfortable 36-22 advantage. That is until the final minute when the rushing game of North Tama pushed its way into the end zone. That made it 36-30 for South Winn.
With 9:27 left to play, Streeter broke out into an open field to score his third touchdown of the game from the Redhawk 48-yard line giving South Winn a little more breathing room with a 44-30 advantage. Trailing by two scores, North Tama switched to a hurry-up offense, scoring just over two minutes later, making it 44-36. South Winn’s lone punt of the game came with 3:26 remaining, giving the Redhawks ample time to move the pigskin, and that they did. North Tama raced into the red zone sitting at the Warrior 12-yard line in the closing minute. A series of incomplete passes and stellar Warrior defense eventually eliminated the Redhawk threat as South Winn got the ball on downs with 25 seconds remaining to secure the win.

Individual notes
The Warriors had 457 total yards. Of that, 401 came from the run.
Streeter, perhaps saving a career night, carried the ball 18 times for 307 yards. He also completed one pass for 56 yards. Defensively, Streeter had five solo and two assisted stops.
Kuboushek went 83 yards on 17 carries and led the Warriors with 14 solo and three assisted tackles. Todd was there for 11 solo and two assisted tackles with two tackles for a loss. He also caught the lone pass from Streeter for 56 yards receiving. Eric Greve provided seven solo tackles and one assisted stop.
