Strong start for SW linksters

By Becky Walz,

It was a solid two-day period for the South Winn golf teams, as the boys’ squad hit the links for the first time Monday at Waukon and both teams were in action Tuesday at Big Rock Golf Course in Fayette Tuesday in an 18-hole triangular.

Boys only
The South Winn boys golf team competed in a nine-hole triangular event at Waukon Golf & Country Club against Waukon and Crestwood on Monday, April 11, finishing third. Waukon came out victorious with 160 followed by Crestwood with 166 and South Winn with a 171.
Senior Carson Wenthold made some noise in the first outing of the season, finishing third with a 38. Also contributing to the Warrior scorecard were Jackson Goltz, 42; Carson Streeter, 44, Braiden Todd, 47, Jordan Baumler, 48; and Brady Lensing, 53.

18-hole triangular
The South Winn girls kicked-off the season with an 18-hole triangular with North Fayette Valley and Clayton Ridge at Big Rock Golf Course in Fayette Tuesday, finishing second. NFV concluded the day with a team score of 461 with the Warriors tallying 472 ahead of the Eagles’ 508.
Katrina Hageman brought in the third-best score of the day with a 114. Paige Jaster and Julia Carnesi both scored 119 and Annie Ondrashek rounded out the SW varsity team score with 120.
“Big Rock is a difficult course, where every hole presents a new challenge. It played tough, but our girls did a nice job staying competitive,” said girls’ coach Glenna Munuswamy.
The Warrior boys also came up just short and finished second with 366 strokes. Clayton Ridge led the field with a 361 while the TigerHawks concluded the day with a 381.
Individual medalist was the Eagles’ Mitchell Randall with an 86, with South Winn senior Carson Wenthold carding an 88 as the runner-up.
Coming through with a 91 was Jackson Goltz followed by Jordan Baumler with a 96. Also on the course for the Warriors were Carson Streeter who fired a 102 and Brady Lensing with a 114.
“This was a good test for the boys at a tough course, especially when the wind picked up later in the afternoon. There were a lot of good things to take away from this. We anticipate that these are two teams that will be in the mix for a conference championship, so it was good to see us compete with them,” said boys’ coach Mike Wenthold.

Coming up
The Warrior squads will host Clayton Ridge at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club in Ossian Thursday, April 13. The South Winn girls will make up a meet at Waukon with the Indians and Decorah Friday, April 14. The teams will kick off next week at Tri City Golf Club against MFL MarMac Monday, April 17.
