The South Winn volleyball team (8-9, 2-1 UIC) traveled to West Union on Tuesday night for a big matchup with North Fayette Valley (6-4, 3-0 UIC) for the lead in the Upper Iowa Conference.
It was the Warriors jumping out early, putting NFV in tough spots with outstanding serving and solid swings. South Winn dominated the first set winning 25-14. In the second set, NFV settled in and it was a back and forth affair with NFV pulling out the close 25-22 set win. That momentum would carry to the final two sets with NFV going on big runs early that the Warriors couldn’t shut off to win 25-15 and 25-19. The Warriors nearly mounted a comeback in the fourth set with a long service run by Abby Wagner but it came up short.
“We knew going in this was going to be a tough matchup with NFV’s size up front and strong offensive game. We really came out on top of our game in that first set, but a lot of credit to NFV for settling in with their serve receive and defense after set one. It felt like a conference championship type of environment and thanks to fans on both sides for giving a great experience for the players on the court,” said Coach Alex Smith.
The Warriors hammered out 30 kills on 136 attack attempts with 26 assists, 57 digs, five total blocks, 12 ace serves and a serving performance of 74-for-81. Katrina Hageman pounded 14 kills and had 18 digs in the contest to go with four aces and served 12-for-13. Wagner provided four kills, seven digs and was 15-for-16 at the service line.
The Warriors host Kee High tonight (Thursday, Sept. 21) for another UIC matchup starting with the freshman squad at 5 p.m. The junior varsity and varsity will follow. Saturday, Sept. 23, South Winn will compete in a tournament in Decorah starting at 8:30 a.m.
