A big first half performance by the South Winn boys’ basketball team (3-2, 3-1 UIC) propelled the Warriors to a 54-33 victory over North Fayette Valley (2-3, 2-2 UIC) Tuesday night at home.
The Warriors hit the hardwood running with an 18-8 lead after the first. The SW defense did its job in the second period, limiting the TigerHawks to three points to give the Warriors a 32-11 halftime advantage. The lead that had been built in the first half provided the cushion South Winn needed as both UIC squads knocked down 22 points in the second half.
“Through three quarters we played probably the best defensive team effort I have seen in a long time. We forced NFV into a lot of tough shots and pushed the pace very well,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “We did a great job of scoring in transition which helped us get out front early. We definitely need to work on our free throw shooting and zone offense as we struggled in both those areas, but otherwise it was a well-played game on our part.”
Carson Wenthold had the hot hand with 16 points and 23 steals to go with three assists. Keagen Streeter provided 10 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Braiden Todd had seven points and five boards.
South Winn travels to Kee Friday, Dec. 16, before taking part in the Border Battle Saturday, Dec. 17, against Grand Meadow in the Luther College gym at 11:30 a.m.
