The wins keep coming for the South Winn boys’ basketball team (5-0, 3-0 UIC) as the Warriors defeated East Buchanan and Mabel-Canton in non-conference action over the weekend.
Non-conference
Picking up a non-conference game Thursday, the Warriors had a battle on their hands at East Buchanan (1-4), but came out on top, 70-66.
“This is a big win for our team. Credit to East Buchanan, they shot the ball really well. It’s tough to beat a team that is shooting the deep ball better than 40 percent against you but we were able to answer all their runs with a nice team effort. Kaden Barton-Franzen stepped up in his second start and got us a couple big buckets and defensive plays,” noted Coach Derek Taylor.
Two-point disparity in scoring in the first and third frames were the difference in the game as the Warriors led 16-14 eight minutes into the contest. Both squads then dropped in 11 in the second, allowing SW to carry a two-point advantage into the break. In the third, the Warriors again outscored the Buccaneers 23-21, leading to the win.
A quartet of Warriors were in double figures with Braiden Todd leading the way with 18 points. Kole Hageman poured and Carson Streeter poured in 16 apiece with Streeter pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Hageman had five boards and two steals as well. With 14 points and 10 rebounds, Matson Winings posted a double-double.
Scoring – Braiden Todd 18; Kole Hageman 16; Carson Streeter 16; Matson Winings 14; Kaden Barton-Franzen 6
Rebounds – Winings 10; Streeter 7; Hageman 5; Barton-Franzen 4; Todd 3; Nolan Sabelka 3; Eric Kriener 1; Assists – Todd 3; Streeter 3; Sabelka 3; Hageman 2; Steals – Hageman 2; Sabelka 2; Todd 1; Winings 1
Border Battle
It was a total team effort again Saturday afternoon as the Warriors competed against Mabel-Canton in the Border Battle at Luther College, with the Warriors snagging the 59-51 victory.
“The Border Battle is always a lot of fun, playing on the college length floor always changes the game style and pace a little. In our third game of the week, we were definitely a little flat out of the gate,” said Coach Taylor. “Defensively it’s another game where we gave up a lot of three’s, something we definitely will need to work on in practice. Nolan Sabelka gave us a great second half effort defensively, and Eric Kriener gave us some big minutes in the fourth after Kole Hageman got dinged up a bit.”
After the Cougars took a 15-14 lead in the first, South Winn battled back to tie the score 23-all at halftime. The Warriors pulled ahead by one in the third and outscored Mabel-Canton 20-13 in the final period to secure the win.
This time it was Streeter pouring in a team-high 17 points. The sophomore also grabbed five rebounds and five assists. Hageman dropped in 14 points to go with five rebounds. Todd finished the game with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Winings garnered eight points, seven boards and four blocks.
Scoring – Streeter 17; Hageman 14; Todd 13; Winings 8; Barton-Franzen 5; Eric Kriener 2
