By Becky Walz,
A slow start spelled trouble for the South Winn boys’ basketball team as the Warriors (13-8, 12-4 UIC) fell on the road at Waukon Monday. However, the Warriors bounced back and took control of Tuesday’s regular season finale with Clayton Ridge to secure the second spot in the Upper Iowa Conference.
On the road
Stepping out of the UIC, the Warriors laced up their sneakers at Waukon (3-16) Monday, falling 62-49.
Neither squad managed many first-quarter points with the Indians on top 7-5. Waukon took off in the second to lead 25-19 at the break. In the third, both teams tallied 19 points, leaving the Indians out front, 44-38. South Winn couldn’t dig out of the hole it was in during the final eight minutes, giving Waukon the win.
The duo of Dawson Wenthold and Carson Streeter led the Warriors with 13 points apiece.
Closing out UIC
Back at home Tuesday, the South Winn defense did a good job rebounding on both ends of the floor, eliminating Clayton Ridge (14-8, 10-6 UIC) from second chance shots to seal the win, 73-40.
The Eagles were limited to just two points in the first six minutes of the first period with SW ultimately leading 11-6 entering the second frame. While CR put the first points on the board in the second, the Warriors issued a four minute scoring drought to the Eagles while scampering to a 24-8 lead. By halftime, the Red and White led 34-18. South Winn continued to dominate the boards in the second half to claim the easy victory.
Carson Wenthold had hot hands with 18 points and six rebounds, while Keagen Streeter put up eight points and grabbed 16 boards.
