Despite the less than desirable temperatures and wind gusts, the South Winn boys’ golf team picked up a win over Postville Thursday night at Silver Springs Golf Course in Ossian.
The Warriors moved to 2-0 be besting the Pirates 187 to 229. SW’s Carson Wenthold was the medalist with a 45 while Jordan Baumler was the runner up by firing a 46. Brandon Frana and Shaun Klimesh came through with 48s to round out the team score, with Klimesh fashioning his career best by 12 strokes. Also getting on the links for the Warriors were Martin Horstman, 50, and Logan Baumler, 51.
“I thought the boys played a really nice round of golf,” said boys’ coach Michael Wenthold. “As a team, we played 10 strokes better than we did last week, so that was great. But as a program, we saw huge improvements all the way up and down the roster. This was a good step in the direction that we want to be heading, especially heading into a busy week next week.”
On the course for the JV boys were Adrian Hageman, 53; Jacob Bohr, 55; Brady Lensing, 56; Dalton Fels, 60; Aiden Feickert, 61; Derek Busch, 66; Mitchell Vagts, 68; Dawson Wenthold, 69; and Brady Jaster, 72.
The girls team also took on Postville; however, SW only had three ladies on the course and were unable to produce a team score, giving the Pirates the win with a 243.
Sydney Becker took medalist honors with round of 51. Freshman Katrina Hageman carded her second consecutive score in the 50s, with a 59, while Brooke Steffans shaved a considerable number of strokes off her previous score to end the day with a 67.
“Our goal is to be at our best come postseason time. The girls are doing all the right things to make this happen. I’m excited to see how much we improve with each meet,” said girls’ coach Glenna Munuswamy.
Monday’s meet with Turkey Valley was postponed until Tuesday, May 4. Tonight (Tuesday, April 20), the Warriors will visit Silvercrest Golf and Country Club in a triangular with Decorah and Turkey Valley at 4 p.m.
